acid etch is old school,......and creates more problems than it solves

use epoxy, if it's PPG: MP170 is a GREAT inexpensive epoxy, and DPLF is the better model, giving more colors, and longer "no need to sand before painting" times

either works great on bare metal, and as a final non sanding sealer coat before painting

I use the PPG MP170 epoxy primer with the MP175 catalyst. It is part of
PPG Omni system. It a great primer. Bare metal should be sanded
120 to 180, old finishes and body filler 220 to 320. Pick up a product
info sheet at your local paint store. Gus

About being thick. I use a 1.4 HVLP and it works great. Gus

EPOXY is for SEALING off whats underneath, it'll fill minor scratches, say down to about 180 or so, but no, it won't work like a high build urethane 2K primer.

FIller primer, or high build (same thing) is for filling deep scratches say down around 40 grit, and it will spray VERY thick, so you get alot to work with in just a couple of passes

PPG calls all epoxies, urethanes, polyesters, sealers AND fillers "primer" so it's a little confusing

hope that clears that up

Apply PPG MP170 two part epoxy primer over bare steel. Do NOT
sand. If you can see scratches, then apply 2 to 4 coats of MP182
two part surfacer. NOW you sand to smooth out all marks. Then apply
basecoat and clear. The MP170 is a great adhisave primer, not a
scratch hider. If your metal work is done to the point where it does
not show any marks through the MP170 then you dont need the MP182
surfacer.The metal should be sanded 120 - 180 for the MP170.
Gus.
