With a 'normal' pearl you shoot a solid base color and the intermediate coat contains the pearl.
With a 'normal' Kandy you shoot a high metallic base first. The intermediate coat is a transluscent color with no metallics or pearls.

There are alot of exceptions to that now. Some kandies are combined into a single base and alot of pearls are single coat now as well. Also some pearls are reversed with the pearl in the base coat and the intermediate is like a kandy.

I sprayed my Chevy truck a 1988 Mitsubishi Starion color in DuPont ChromaBase BC/CC. It's a flashy blue that color-shifts a bit light-to-dark, with a hint of purple.

IIRC, it's DuPont K8904, and it has pearl AND tiny metallics in the base - no midlayer of any sort. I did this 5 years ago and I'm guessing this sort of mix is quite common now. I'm sure it's not as stunning as with a kandy translucent midlayer, but it's quite good.
