Really outstanding work as usual..... Glass, ughhhh.... I could write an encylopedia on what's changed with that stuff over the years. From car stuff to the crap we see going into furniture now, it is indeed getting thinner, and in my opinion more brittle. May not even be feasible to cut down some of the "new" windshields......

Just had my windshield replaced on my 2018 Toyota. I searched for quite a while to find a shop that had glass made in the USA.

Found one that told me there was a supplier in Dayton, Ohio, so I agreed. When the guy got here I checked with him and sure enough the brand name was Chinese.

After a phone call, they apologized and promised to deliver a Made in the USA windshield in a week or so. Later they called and said my windshield was Made in the USA and that manufacturer was located in Dayton, Ohio.

I did an online search and found that the manufacturer in Dayton, Ohio had been purchased by the Chinese. Ugh.

Uggghhhhh.... see that's what I'm talking about right there. It's harder and harder to keep up with where these supply chains are coming from. Sorry, didn't mean to take the thread astray..... this stuff is just wearing me down.....

I want to add this to this made in China conversation

ITS not being Racist !!!! I wouldn't mind buying China made anything IF the Quality of the product was at least good but its not good or even close to good.
And why is it its all you can find or buy ?

Why is it they buy up a product then Lower the quality standards so low To create a Junk product? Americans Are stupid for buying the crap!

Simple Economics STOP buying crap junk made in China sold exclusively by Walmart, Amazon & Ebay and more.

chopolds wrote:68 Coronet R/T, as a matter of fact, I've been honing my welding skills on doing pot metal. The Olds has pot metal vent window housings that have to be shortened 1 1/2" to match the chopped top. Since no one around does that type of work, I'm playing around with doing it myself! It REAL tricky to do!

I too have a Vent window on my 57 I have to weld up it has cracked.
I have done some research on Pot metal welding and will be using Muggy weld products to repair mine.

check out this page lots of Pot metal repair videos with their stuff bottom of page.

Dennis, concentrating of customer cars for now. I lost my 'mojo' on the Olds-Mad when I broke the brand new windshield, cutting it. But tying up details on the mechanicals, so I can fire the engine for the first time.
As for Muggy weld, I'm sure you know it's a very low temp solder. My plater does not like it, so I am working on actual welding the pot metal. Probably help when I do the upper tailgate , as it is ALL pot metal, and not very thick. Welds are stronger than solder. Using the TIG, and (I believe) Blue Demon welding rod. SO far, so good. Even welded some thin Mustang light assemblies, and they came out fine!

Bummer on the windshield, and yes I know the feeling.
I may look into welding pot metal as well but it will have to be with a MIG. Can't afford a TIG welder this late in the game.

$329?

DC only and its just a Lift start But will dam well weld any sheet metal you throw at it and then some. Yes you would need some consumables and a Bottle of Argon but you would be welding! Not just using a Metal Glue gun!

It does take some practice and does have a learning curve BUT its well worth the effort.
Once you learn and figure out Tig You'll love it.

Still stalling on the Olds-Mad, cannot find a good, old windshield. Might have to drive to VA to get one, around 390 miles, one way!
BUT, not sitting on my butt! Did a bunch of custom work on this 51 Ford, Frenched tail lights, 55 Chevy style headlights, Merc grill shell, custom grill (Merc bumper guards + Plymouth grill center), opened up the wheel wells, and adapted Merc skirts (later to reshape the front into scoops, and matching the side trim shape), shaved handles, rounded corners everywhere, etc. Just a mild customs. Left in primer, returning next fall for prep and paint.
Also finished the unending bodywork on the 57 Olds, painted the stripe between the side trim in Candy Apple red, and got the back half painted, GM Diamond white pearl, with extra gold pearl added. Got a sinus infection, so I haven't been in the shop for 2 weeks, with that, and the holidays.
