I’ve got the hood flange much smoother now.
Also, there were knockouts for the frame horns if a front bumper was to be used so I filled those.
I also had to sand down a ridge that went around the grill/headlight opening.
1949 Ford F-1 Pickup
I took the clip outside and began the sanding so I could begin adding some fiberglass. 40 grit on a belt sander worked good on the top. I used a belt sander, die grinder and a scale remover on the underside. Here it is with the form made out of insulation board. I had to apply packaging tape over the foam and I then laid some resin and fiberglass mat.

Here it is with Duraglas to finish it out better.

Greg, I haven't yet read all of your build thread but I will. For now I have just a couple questions which probably would be answered if I took the time to read through your thread, but what the heck!!! 1) Holy ****! Your airbrushing skills are phenomenal! 2) Awesome Truck! 3) Did you cut a fiberglass front end up? 4) Did I mention that you airbrushing skills are over the top? Cant wait to finish reading your thread and see more. I know what you mean by losing interest in a project. I still need to finish up my 65 Caddy convertible that I originally planned on 6 long weekends and that was three years ago! My new (to me) L99 is being delivered next week! Oh yeah, one more time - Kudos on that airbrushing! Sent by the random thoughts from the voices in my head...

Thanks for the compliments. I hope to one day get back to airbrushing. It’s really enjoyable and easier on my body than working on cars and trucks. As far as the fiberglass, yes when I bought the truck it came with a 1 piece tilt front end. I had it manually tilting at one point but I really didn’t care for it much so I cut it apart. The fenders and grill are bolted in place and I’m planning on reverse tilting the hood. |

I decided to alter the taillight to swing out instead of up for my fuel fill. I just hope I’ll have enough room to get the fuel nozzle to the filler tube now.

Since this was a tilt front end, the lower fender sections were separate pieces that bolted to the running boards and the rest of the fender lowered on to them. Since I’m not tilting I used epoxy adhesive to glue them together. I then used the belt sander to better shape them with the fender curve. I then v’d the mating line. I’ll be using duraglas to blend this as well.

Finally got the fiberglass clip attached. Arms were fabbed for the front. They attach to the frame using polyurethane bushings. I made some brackets that attach to the cab on one end and to the steel mounts I epoxied to the clip on the other end.

Here are the hidden hinges I finished up on the passenger side.

Will the fiberglass work ever end?? The hood curvature in the rear where it curves down on the cowl wasn’t molded right. No matter how I tweaked and applied pressure it was obvious that some cutting was needed. I cut the brace on the underside loose and then made relief cuts to tighten the curvature.
Ratchet straps to pull in where the relief cuts are. I used Duraglas in the relief cuts as I beveled them to receive it. After the Duraglas dried I laid resin and fiberglass on the inside to strengthen it. I’ve roughly finished the area with Duraglas. I’ll finish shaping later. |
