The owner told me he had this painted by one of the best paint and body shops in his area of California. He now has a home near me as well.

This will be a complete strip and paint. The chips go right to the metal and it appears they may have used some sort of metal prep or rust converter prior to painting.

Is it going the same red or doing a color change? Looks like a pretty clean 1966 Chevy, the 60-66 trucks had some problems with panel fitment. Should not have a problem getting everything to fit better. Look forward to seeing this one come along! Should be interesting to see what it looks like once it's taken down.

How old is the paint? It appears that it may be Lacquer paint that's been sitting in the sun, the old Lacquer liked to crack and get crows feet.

What color are you going to paint it?
You're going to strip the entire truck to metal?

I think he said the paint is 6 years old but can't remember for sure. It is a Corvette Red but he is trying to find his can of touch up paint to get the year and code for me.

When I broke off a couple of paint chips it went to the metal but seemed to have a blackish film stuck to the bottom layer of primer.
There are places with the paint is literally peeling away from the metal.

Thanks. Its a 7 acre parcel in an area where the minimum parcel size is 6 acres. We bought it about 17 years ago before this area became popular.

Going back with Red and I plan to strip everything to metal from the door jambs outward. Its the only way to insure this cracking, peeling and chipping will stop.
He wants to leave the interior alone but personally I think he'll change his mind later. The dash has some pretty good chips on it as well.

Must've been nice not having near by neighbors, but even now in the picture i see your neighbors are pretty far away. Do they ever complain about you painting there?

Whoa, all that stripping is going to take a lot of time. You're going with heating the paint up and razor blade to remove it all?
Are you going to do a guide coat and block it all?

Im sure the guy will want the dash fixed once he sees the truck looking new and the interior not so new.

Love the truck! These have gorgeous lines. Hope it's not a mess underneath the paint.

On the quoted passage above, can either of you please elaborate a bit here? I know about razor blade stripping, but not about heating the paint. Do you just use a heat gun and do a small area? How does it work on bondo?

Reason I ask - I will be stripping my Alfa Romeo down to the metal soon, and I like the idea of stripping with a razor blade (less mess). But when I tried a razor blade, I only got the color off. Underneath the color was the primer, then skim coat (thick in places) of bondo, and then bare metal. If heat helps, I'm interested!

Sorry if this is a partial hi-jack, but thanks in advance for any info!

The heat gun softens the paint and makes it much easier to remove.
I use a long handled razor holder like this one: http://www.mutualscrew.com/product/tita ... Akt98P8HAQ

You heat an area and get the blade under the paint and then just keep the heat gun pointed in front of the scraper blade. Usually comes off in 6-10" strips. Works really good on vehicles that have had multiple paint jobs. Clean up with a shop vac since the strips of paint will harden and easily break into smaller pieces.

Sometimes the factory primer is still there when you are done but going over it with 80 grit on a DA removes it quickly.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing so I ordered some chips from them to see how it matches up.
I still have an unopened gallon of their original red I bought on sale when they quit making base coat for a while.
