Hi everyone, new to the forums. First post. Thanks for having me!
So I'm painting the top of my car black and these are the steps that I had taken:
- Standing with 400
- paint over original blue w/ black perfect match
- apply several coats as instructed by can
- Standing with wet 1000
- Standing with wet 2000
Pictures attached shows results.
In all honestly, for a first timers, I'm not that heartbroken with the results, but now I want to clean up the mess and make it look good. What do I need to do now? Also, when should I have applied clear coat, as I hadn't done at all due to uncertainty.
Thanks!
First timer, what should I do next?

Hey Joey
Congrats on finding the forum Go back to the first page of the foum called "Body and Paint" at the top of the page are "sticky threads". These are hilighted in blue and are locked threads. Read the one titled "bare metal repaint or reshoot". There is another thread covering "what Grit sand paper to use" I suggest reading each of those. As far as your project goes you need to do some more reading as I suggested And follow your Tech sheets that come with the products if your dealer didn't give them to you when you bought them you'll have to find them on the paint company's website sight and follow their instructions. You may already be out of recoat window to applied clear coat and may have to reapply or remove it and redo it I don't know without reading the Tech sheets nor will anyone else know either you need to read the Tech sheet. Not just the instructions on the can. The Tech sheet includes more isntructions. Have fun Dennis B.

I'm not sure what you mean by "instructions on can?"
Did you use spray cans to paint this or automotive paint? 1968 Coronet R/T

I didn't know what he meant either and gave him the benefit of doubt that he was using automotive paint. It also sounds like he sanded his base coat?

i assume that "black perfect match paint" is duplicolor spray bombs, which are lacquer. if i recall correctly,if the original paint was enamel/urethane and ya put lacquer over it , its gonna roadmap or peel in shorttime. imo, what ya need to do now is sand it all off and start over with the right products. also, looks like theres some clearcoat failure going on there so it would be wise to sand down past the clearcoat. |
