Yeah we are pretty good at scope creep. Going to try to get car ready for paint before October this year. |
|
My son wanted to remove all the factory under coating on the floor before we paint it to get a smooth look like when we painted the rear floor section last year. We used wire wheel on angle grinder and it was super tough to get off being it is a rubber like substance. My son did most of the work with me doing some while he took breaks. We will need to further smooth with sand paper but the under coating is gone now.

My son wanted the unused holes in the engine compartment welded shut; around 50 of them. Also 15 or so unused studs on firewall were ground down flush. Firewall used to look like a porcupine with all the studs every where. Then we both pitched in to wire wheel all the surfaces down to bare metal. Still need to skim some fiberglass filler over several areas to smooth them out in order to finalize the preparation.

Wire wheeled undercoating and all paint off of front wheel well areas

Final prep of the floor and moved back to the detached garage

|
Two coats of white PPG epoxy primer followed by one wet coat of grey Nason epoxy primer
|
|
One coat of epoxy primer, let dry, then panel bond to seal the seams in and out.
Prior to epoxy prime numerous areas were skimmed with fiber glass filler to smooth out. Last edited by 69cuda340s on Mon Sep 19, 2022 7:55 am, edited 1 time in total.

Epoxy prime over sealed seams then paint eng compartment body color.
There were several rounds of epoxy prime, skims of filler sand smooth, first paint had fish eyes, had to sand that all down, get shop and equipment in order, then finally a good color spray out: |

Are you keeping track of your hours of labor?
Would be interesting to see what this restoration would have cost if you had paid a shop to do it. I decided not to do so on my GTX but now I wish I had done it. 1968 Coronet R/T
