Hi fellas,

I thought I might as well post some "before", "during", and "after" pics here of the Extreme Makeover- Car Edition of my 1986 Camaro Z28. I live in Ontario Canada, about 2 hours south of Toronto, 20 mins west of Buffalo NY. I bought the car in January 2006 from a guy in Salt Lake City UT and did the 2 day drive back home with it. It still had the original paint and in decent condition considering it was over 20 years old.

From the day I got it, I enjoyed it. I raced it in autocross events, road course lapping days (car was dynoed at close to 400 HP), and also a few shows.

This pic is from last summer when I got 3rd in Mild Modified Class of the Ontario Camaro Nationals;

I always wanted to paint the car, and a bright color also so I decided that his winter would be the time to do it, with the help of my dad. He's a retired mechanic and has also done 3-4 paint jobs in the last couple years.

This is the pic when I parked the car this past November before the "tear down" began;

As you can see the body is in really good shape. There was only a couple minor surface rust spots under the doors and that was about it. Since I was doing a color change, that meant complete tear down. This is what it looked like a month later;

For the new paint, we did the engine bay, door jams & frames, and hatch jams first. Here it is in 2 coats of Dupont 7704S primer;

The color is Dupont Chrome Orange which consists of base & mid coat pearl colors;
Base: http://www.rbvracing.com/images/Jan08/c ... gebase.jpg
MidCoat: http://www.rbvracing.com/images/Jan08/c ... asemid.jpg

Obviously we used the Chromabase, and I added an oz of Dupont 12305S activator to every qt of ready-to-paint base & midcoat. We did the mistake of not using a white sealer before spraying the base, which lead to needing 8 coats of base, and 5 coats of mid to have "decent" coverage. I say decent, because if you look in a certain light, you can still see "lite" areas of coverage, but you sort of have to be looking for it.

Here's the completed engine bay with all things reinstalled;

We only put 4 coats of base, 2 of mid in the engine bay as it's not as crucial of an area.

I haven't uploaded all my other pics yet of the different stages of paint for the main car. When I do I'll update the post.

Exterior is finally complete....not a perfect job but it turned out WAY better than I thought it would considering this wasn't painted in a booth, by 2 people with not much experience...basically a "backyard" job.

I was paying $78/qt, but I need ALOT of it because I didn't use a white sealer before putting on the base. I think I used almost 2 gallons of paint (base & mid combined) for the whole car...that includes engine bay, door jams, etc..

I love Z28's but not that body style. When I saw your color choice, I thought eek :shock:

But after seeing the car complete, all I can say is ****!!!!! The combination of color, graphics, rims and quality really makes for a nice car. Nice job!

Thanks. Alot of Camaro guys don't like it, but I had a vision in mind when I started the project and it's exactly how I wanted it. I was looking for the "motorsports" look, as I do track the car 8-10 times a summer. What's the point of having a sports car with lots of power if you're only going to go to the local cruises every week? :lol:
