I have a 1990 BMW 325i with a piece of the rear bumper cover missing, and I was hoping to get some advice about the best way to repair it. I have attached pictures. I’ve never done any auto body work before, and I am not expecting this to look great, just much less noticeable. Is there some sort of body filler that would adhere well to this bumper and not separate or crack over time? My best guess about the bumper material is that it is PC + PBT. I’m basing that off of a site (polyvance) that doesn’t list my car, but has a similar one (1991-93 318i convertible) listed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi, Joe. Unfortunately, almost anything you do with that area is going to be kind of a "hack" job in my opinion. I did a quick part search and yeah, a 38 year old bumper cover isn't exactly laying around anywhere. Since you've identified your plastic you could try and get a later similar cover and cut out a piece to plastic weld but that's not easy on this. As plastics age they sure don't improve so that may not work at all. Just shoving a filler in there will most certainly be very temporary and quickly start both ghosting and probably cracking out...... You might want to check with some BMW clubs or forums and see if there are some parts hoarders in the bunch. I'm helping a friend restore his 1973 VW Thing and we have found every single piece he has needed so far. Parts are out there......search,search, search....
