Hi Guys,

Just finishing up a fiberglass fairing from a bike. This time while wiping it down I could literally feel the hair on my arms lifting up as I got close to the fairing--lot of static electricity. Never really noticed this before although, I am sure it was happening. I just laid 2 coats of clear and waiting to apply another in a few minutes. I'm sure I will find lots of tiny bits of dirt in it. Not a huge deal as I intended to give it a light cut and buff anyway but just curious if there is a (easy?) way to cut down the static. I am doing a single stage snow mobile hood (fiberglass) this week and due to the size and pricing, I really don't want to have to cut/buff that piece unless it gets a lot of dirt in it.--a few nibs are fine but.... Thoughts?

you might try a ground wire, usually the tack rag eliminates a lot of it.

I could try a ground wire. I did see a lot of tiny particles in the clear when I left the booth--I'll see how it looks in the morning. If they are very small, I may just go right to the 3 steps of compound/polish rather than the 2000 wet sand and then the compound. It's an experiment I guess but I know I can make it look great--just a matter of time.

So, would a 50 or 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol work? Do you do it after or before a tack wipe? Dumb me.... you did say after.

Yep, alcohol and water mix is what I use - last thing before painting (but not over base coat).

O.K. I'll try that. My fairing turned really nice--not as much dirt as I expected but still needs a de nibbing. I can't help thinking some of it is static related so if I could avoid some of that, that would be nice.
