Hi All !! Way back when (late 60's early 70's), I watched my brother trying his hand at "custom" painting. He is NOT a painter. Anyways, he would do some paint like spiderwebs and then some that looked like "Silly String" when he would do motorcycle fenders and tanks. I believe he used an airbrush to do this. Does anyone have a clue how it's done?? I asked him how he did it, but he didn't even remember doing it (it *WAS the 70's) I think it's a combo of low air pressure and very little reducer/thinner.
I would like some clues as how to do the cobwebs AND/OR the "Silly String" ... Thanks to all for any help/suggestions ... Timm .......
How to get "Silly String" effect ??

We called it CobWebbing. And it was done with ............Lacquer! Using a low gun pressure, the lacquer would be unthinned and would "string" out of the gun. Today's paint doesn't string quite so well. Even if you use unreduced paint, it still seems to come out grainy. This is one of those experiment and see what happens situations. Take a spare panelor put a piece of masking paper on the wall. Using a large gun nozzle opening 1.4 or larger, run some unreduced basecoat, at low pressure, through your gun and see what happens. if it doesn't string, try letting some solvent evaporate out of it. Then try again. BUT, do not put lacquer in a basecoat enamel/urethane system! try doing this with modern day paint. Play around and please let us know how it works out for you. I sure am curious to find out!!! I tried it about 10 years ago and the paint did string, but not as much as I would like. I haven't had time to try it again. Crazy Horse Custom Paint

There is a product called webbing solution that you can get to make the paint do the stringy look that you are trynig to get . I have never done it myself , but have been doing some research on it for the interior of my next boat project . Here is a link to one product that will do it , but I am not yet sure what the best product to use would be .

Marbleized technique is what I think you are referring to... It's done with Saran wrap ( plastic food wrap) YouTube has many how to type videos

The painter i used to work did this once. He wetted the crap out of the base coat, and before it even began to dry, applied the sawran wrap. It was pretty cool to watch. Captian OBVIOUS.

I agree with you Ding this effect has nothing to do with the use of plastic wrap. That stuff I posted from Alsa? ever played with it? I have a quart of there Crazar and I cant get it to work right either. There instructions I find very lacking. Dennis B.
