Planning to paint my #2 bike. The scheme I am going for is a black bike with red flames and a silver pinstripe. Here is my plan…

Spray the whole thing with a very coarse silver BC (Planet Color)
Tape out some flames with 1/8” fine line tape
Bag the inside of the flames off and spray the outside black plus a pearl effects coat
Pull tape but leave the 1/8” fine line in place
Bag the black and spray the flames red plus an effects coat
Pull the fine line tape revealing the silver pinstripe
Cover with a few sessions of clear/sanding/clear until you can’t feel the stripe

Any trick, tips, or things to watch out for would be appreciated. Thanks.

Nope sounds good! Careful laying down paint close to tape. If it gets to thick the paint will pull up as you pull the tape up. What type of bike?

2006 Kawasaki VN900 with aftermarket hard bags, pic below. This will be my first paint job on anything larger than a helmet. I have been working up to doing the full bike over the last few months. This is what I have so far... No metal flake for this bike, maybe the next one.

In process. I work 50-60 hrs a week, so this is mostly a weekend thing. Plus I'm working outside, can only work when it s not raining. It's probably going to take me 3-4 months to complete.

Bags needed some work. They were worse than I thought. Got them flat and in primer. Washed the red parts in the rain Wednesday night.

Here's where I'm at:

Hit a little bump in the road this weekend.

When I pulled the gas tank I found the bottom had several areas where rust had started crawling under the paint. Apparently the manufacturer did not seal the underside very well. Also found the seam where they welded the top and bottom halves of the tank together was rough in a few places. No rust in the seam, but looked like it was just inviting rust to move in. So I sanded everything down with some 100 grit, sand blasted a few welds, and then used a cheap paint brush to seal most of it with Tamco DTA epoxy primer. Went back with an airbrush on the outside of the seam. Everything went well. Better than factory now. Before (just started sanding) and after brush application pictures below. No pic after the airbrush.
