I am a week or so away from spraying some paint for the first time with my DIY turbine.
Any tips for spraying Tamco high build epoxy with a six stage DIY tubrine with a old simco design TP tools gun?
I've got extra slow reducer
Doing the work in Oregon 85+ degrees with decent humidity
How much reducer to use?
What size tip?
any other tips or tricks?
Thanks all!

Okay, so big thing.... make sure you follow the induction period after mixing.... In your temp.s I mix and let it sit for 30 minutes. Before you add any reducer take a regular wood stir stick and plunge it to the bottom and rapidly draw it up. From the time it is a stream coming off the stick until it breaks up into droplets should be in th 5 to 7 second range. If you are in that range add just an ounce or two of the extra slow reducer and test again... it should not have changed/thinned it much. For tip size use the biggest you have... 1.8 up to to 2.5 is fine. As far as tips on this stuff.... get it all on.... and don't even touch it for 2 to 3 days. It will harden up but turn to a fine crystal like dust when you block sand. If it is gummy it needs to sit longer....

how long do I need to wait between coats?
the TDS doesnt mention anything about flash time Thanks |
I shot this one over the weekend. Used a AirGunza witha 1.8 tip. I have the Sata 0.9L cups, so I mixed 250 ml of each part A and B, waited 30 minutes, added 175 ml of medium reducer and after shooting it, I would go in and immediately start cleaning my gun. With the gun clean, I would mix up another batch and set a timer for 30 minutes, that was my flash time. I love using this material. I need to purchase more to finish this project. well....
I sprayed a few test panels on Monday, and Friday evening they are still gummy balls up when trying to sand. test panels were 4oz primer, 4oz hardener, and .75oz reducer (reducer added after 30min) temps have been over 75 degrees (over 100 the last two days) any input is greatly appreciated |
With 8 oz of total mix volume, you can add up to 2.8 oz of reducer to help it flow. I mix my components A & B well, then measure out the 35% reducer in a separate cup. After the 30 minute induction time, I then eyeball the reducer to what I feel is an appropriate viscosity. On the third or whatever is my last coat is, I usually add the full 35% by volume reducer. This is with my 1.8 tip Air Gunza running around 2 Bar. As far as it not being hard by the next day, are your components fully agitated prior to pouring them off and mixing together? The Part B catalyst gets pretty thick at the bottom, I use two mixing sticks held together and get everything off the bottom of the can and try to mix it in well, then put it on my el cheapo HF paint shaker. And DO NOT forget to use fresh mix sticks for each of the components - I heard of some guy screwing that up before.... Sent by the random thoughts from the voices in my head...

Thanks for the feedback, I am on point with everything you are suggestion, maybe jsut not enough hardener, viscosity seemed correct for what Darrell had been describing for timing on the paint stick drips. I had the local hardware store shake the cans before I poured the mix.
I may have figured out my mistake, I had just grabbed a random piece of sand paper, it was 400 grit. I tried to sand today with 180 and it worked great.... still going to spray a few more test panels to make sure I can get everything dialed in before I shoot the car. thanks for your feedback!! |
