I’m going to be buying a Tekna Copper with the 7E7 air cap. I already have the Tekna Pro with the same air cap that I use for base and clear. The Copper would be my designated clear gun. I’ve shot clear with my Pro and thought the results were decent. I’ve heard a lot of good about the TE20 air cap for clear jobs. If I were to buy the TE20 air cap, would it fit the copper? I’ve heard Devilbiss/Tekna Caps And Tips were all interchangeable. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Also, anyone have any opinions of the 909 and TE10 air caps? Just trying to find the best air cap for clear.

I can't speak from experience but I have been researching the Tekna Pro Lite that comes with the TE10 and TE20 air caps. What I found so far is the holes on the TE10 are smaller than the TE20 meaning the droplet size comes out smaller on the TE10 giving a flatter finish for a restoration type paint job where you plan to make the finish like glass. The TE20 produces larger droplets creating more orange peel for when you are trying to match an existing OEM type finish.

I use the Tekna Copper 7E7 with a 1.4 tip for clear.
I also use an Iwata LPH400 1.4 Silver Cap for clear.

Both guns will produce fantastic results if set up and used properly. These pics are 3 coats of clear straight out of the gun with no buffing:

The point being that you cannot buy equipment that will automatically lay clear properly on a panel. You will need to have the right equipment, set it up properly and then practice, practice, practice.

That’s what I have gathered in my research as well. I just wasn’t sure if the air cap would fit the Copper head.

Why would you want to swap the caps when the ones designed for the gun work perfectly fine?

Because I’ve read that the TE20 aircaps are a better aircap then the 7E7. I understand where everyone is coming from, it’s just the settings you need to set up for your liking and practice, practice, practice. Like my original post said, I have the Tekna Pro with the 7E7 aircap and really like it for base. I just figured that if I swapped the air cap on the Tekna Copper from a 7E7 to a TE20 Cap.. that might give me for flexibility for replicating oem clear coat finishes. I’d buy a pro light but I’m not wanting the smaller gun as I have larger hands nor do I want to pay the extra $$.

Okay. Be sure to post and let us know if they are interchangeable and how it turns out.

So, got a solid answer from Devilbiss.

They say that the TE10/TE20 AND HV30 air caps will NOT work on the Tekna Copper/ Quickclean. The Tekna 7E7 air cap is model specific to the Copper and Quickclean as they are the air caps designed for the spray guns. Pretty straight forward.

Has anyone on here had any experience with the Tekna Copper? How does it spray? I’d be using this gun just for clear. All feed back appreciated.

I was just on Devilbiss web sight checking out these new guns, WOW! seams the at least with Devilbiss they have taken the idea of needing a different gun for Primer, Base and Clear to a whole new level now and are pushing the idea that you need a different Air caps as well for different coatings.
I cant remember if it was IWATA or SATA with the Purple Orange and silver air caps that started the air cap deal but seams that Devilbiss is in on it now too at least with some of there new line.

I can paint a whole car with one gun start to finish just changing the fluid tip and then I only needed two a 1.8 for primer and a 1.4 for base and clear maybe a 2.0 for Polly. no need for multiple guns or air caps all I have to do is clean my gun good! and it can and will spray Clear like glass!
Why you needed multiple guns started with the idea of keeping a dedicated Clear gun just to avoid accidental color contamination. instead of good gun cleaning practices. by Production painters that dont break there guns down every time they change color but were flushing or using a gun cleaner machine.
NOW you need multiple guns multiple fluid tips and multiple air caps! LOL Im Glad I am not just starting out lol what a way to muddy the waters even more! I bet the Paint gun manufactures are just loving it there selling 4 times as many guns and parts as they ever did.

:rotfl:

My advice to a new guy avoid these fancy expensive guns look at the FLG the GTI and the Plus from Devilbiss or if you really wanna spend big money look at the IWATA and SATA but keep it simple you don't need multiple air caps and you really don't need a different gun for Base and clear most base and clear is sprayed with a 1.4 or a 1.3 the difference between the two is not very much a 1.3 is a little slower and if all you have is a 1.3 you can compensate for that with the needle turning it in a little more. I will say a dedicated Primer gun is a good idea though as they use a bigger fluid tip a 1.8 in many cases for Hi build and a 2.0-2.2 for Polly but I use a 1.4 for Epoxy in my Base gun.
