i need to buy some full sized paint guns, ive read that i want a 1.4 for base and 1.8 for primer. id like to get either a single gun with exchangeable tips or two guns if you guys think a single gun just isnt practical. i plan to buy menards guns (cheaper) OR i can pickup one off my snapon truck if we think that a quality gun is a must have... if i go snapon tho i will only want a single gun.

thoughts?

I started with these and they performed very well. http://www.spraygunworld.com/products/A ... rimer.html

Iwata knock-offs that use less CFM of air than some of the other brands. Your air compressor must be able to handle a spray gun's CFM and PSI requirements. These use: 10 CFM @ 29 PSI. Your compressor should put out at least 13 CFM @ 29 PSI to handle these guns.

By comparison:
SATA 5000 = 15.2 CFM @ 29 PSI

Tekna Copper: 13 CFM @ 29 PSI

DeVilbiss Finishline: 13 CFM @ 23 PSI

This is why we recommend as a minimum a compressor that puts out 15 CFM.

Sorry I am not Familiar with Snap on' s available guns I am sure they are fine guns But like every thing Snap on sells its over priced Hard to get parts for and always a delay and waiting for Parts.
As said above Air compressor is the Heart of any shop Buy the biggest baddest one you can afford you wont regret it!

As far as my Gun recommendations for a beginner/Hobbyist :
I would get a Cheap and readily available NEW OR USED Devillbiss "670 Plus gun" with multiple Fluid tips a 1.4 and 1.8 more if you can spring for it! there are 6 total available for it.
I would also Purchase an additional separate air cap from Devilbiss The Air cap from the "GTI" the GTI uses a "2000" Air cap and is completely interchangeable on the 670 Plus gun. Giving you Multiple $300.00 guns, if you get all the available Fluid tips it would be like owning 12 guns in all with the possible combinations of the Two Air caps and 6 fluid tips.

I would also purchase a Good supply of new seals for the gun at same time.
The Gun likes Fluid needle packing's regularly, Baffle seal's occasionally and Cup seals occasionally.
The Plus comes with the "410" Aircap and the GTI has the "2000" Aircap having multiple Air caps and Multiple Fluid Tips would make a very very Versatile gun. the 410 Cap for clears and Single stage and the 2000 aircap for Base coats and Primmer. there is no need to worry about the Fluid needle as both guns use the same needle.
Guns & All parts are readily available from Devilbiss online.

There really is no need for multiple Guns as Long as your Anal about keeping your guns clean, It only takes a few minutes to completely break the gun down and wash it thoroughly with Thinner.
The big deal about having Multiple guns comes from "THE WHAT IF" you don't get some tiny bit of color washed out before spraying clear?
So hence you need a separate gun's for Clear BUT its all Hogwash! Clean your gun properly and thoroughly and you wont have any problems.

After spraying base primmer epoxy or clear through any of my guns I completely break the gun down and flush it out spotless, as long as its done right away after spraying anything through them they wash out effortlessly with fresh clean Lacquer thinner, even an hour or so latter.
So in reality if your not spraying a whole lot or not in a big hurry there really no need for multiple guns, A gun that's affordable, can easily perform multiple jobs with perfection and easy to get parts for cheaply would and is an invaluable tool.

As Doright has explained, having multiple guns is a luxury and not a necessity.

The one thing that I would suggest, if you are going to be spraying the HB polyester fillers like the Evercoat G2FF (G2 Feather Fill) which is great stuff, get yourself a second $40 TCP 2.5 tip primer gun. Those style HB sanding primers can go off quickly in your gun - don't ask me how I know.

Don't even bother looking at a SnapOn for multiple reasons.

If you had a dedicated cheap 2.5 tip gun for the HB primers, you can do fine with a 1.3 and 1.8 set of tips.

Make sure that your air compressor is in good shape and use air filtering.

Best tip: Clean your gun, clean your gun, clean your gun. It's easy.

I would not recommend a Spray Poly primmer to a Beginner, Personally I would recommend a beginner stay away from them!!!! But as OFB said get a dedicated gun for them with a 2.0 or 2.2 fluid tip the stuff is thick plus you wanna put a lot of it down fast that's why you need such a large fluid tip. personally I would stay away from them!

Poly fillers are a Spray Filler that will Kick in about 10-15 minutes depending on Temp Read the Tech sheet!!!!!!!
It will get rock hard in your gun if any is in it at the time it decides to kick!
Its impossible to clean out once it has kicked in the gun destroying your gun!
The stuff isn't to be messed with till your ready as a Painter!
You should have done a few successful paint jobs before messing with the stuff!!!!!!

You mix it up pour it in your gun and spray it all as fast as you can then quickly clean your gun out. Takes Acetone to wash the gun out not Lacquer Thinner.
I have used the stuff on special AREAS of a project but NOT the whole car!
Also Don't let it sit long before you start sanding it!!!!!!
The longer it sits the harder it gets!!!!
I would compare sanding the stuff to sanding concrete! NOT FUN! till you get it opened up "Sanding off the skin" then its not so bad.
I have used both Slick Sand and Feather Fill one is Harder than the other, Personally I don't like using the stuff.
Back in the day The stuff had a bad reputation and a tendency to Crack because its so hard rather than flex with body panels a lot of experienced guys avoid using the stuff for that reason. Today's Stuff is light years a head of the original stuff but I still do not recommend for a beginner.
