As mentioned above and make sure the vent hole in the cap is not plugged.

Fluttering is usually caused by an air leak. The most common spots are the joint between cup and gun body, the packing gland that the needle passes through and the joint where the fluid tip screws in.

Disassemble, clean and check any seals. Nip up the packing gland if necessary.

I've also seen fluttering caused by a sticking air valve. Again disassemble, clean and lubricate (lightly). Reassemble and check operation.

What kind of gun is it? without knowing what gun your dealing with hard to offer advice.

So many here use the older Devilbiss designs
https://www.autorefinishdevilbiss.com/s ... oting.aspx

If it is an older Devilbiss check fluid tip packing they do go bad from improper install and over tightening.
Also on some models they have two fluid Fluid tip packing's one inside one on out side not all models have the inside Packing.

welp, in that case, the way to fix it is to toss it in the round file and get a quality gun. :)
do that and youll soon be saying that HF gun didnt really work fine all them years.

Thanks for all responses.
I believe my painter skills are not better than my gun. I paint a few body parts a month. I found my first $16 gun, combined parts from 2 guns and finally painted a hood.
Maybe I need to start buying Deloreans, they don't need paint jobs.:)

you dont have to take it from me but take it from me:
upgrading to a quality gun will help tremendously to make you a better painter.
i started with a devilbiss startingline. upgraded to a finishline 3. big difference and work came out a LOT better. then upgraded to a copper tekna.
it is heaven spraying with that gun.
