Hi Everyone,
Any recommendations for electric 5HP 240V single phase air compressor motors. Would like to get a quality USA Made and good durable long lasting unit. I see lots of $180 made of tin ones from over seas on Ebay, but I don't want junk.
Any recommendations on "where to buy" and "Brand Names" that are known for their quality is appreciated,
Thanks in advance ~ Lenny B

Baldor makes a good motor. There are a few things you need to keep in mind. Frame size. The shaft size. Whether it is a F1 or F2 motor. Which means what side of the motor the electrical connections are on. I did a quick search. This 5 hp single phase 240v compressor duty. Also when wiring it up make sure you remember which way the motor spun. It can be wired to go either direction. If I find anything else I will reply. Marathon makes good motors.

When comparing motors also compare amp draw, that's the true
power of the motor. There are big differences in motors, horsepower ratings are all over the place, some lie. One brands 5 hp motor can be way less power than other brands 5 hp. You'll notice that the amp draw is quite high on the quality motors like Baldor. The price is proportional too. Some imported motors are way under powered to be classified by their horsepower ratings, that's why they're cheaper. You can look on line to check how many amps a 5 hp should draw, then compare. I think it's about 30 amps total, for 220 volt that's 15 per leg. JC.

Thanks Guys for the input.
Also, I called Eaton Compressor to ask what brand motors they use since it will be powering one of their new pumps. Megan at Eaton said they use NIDEC motors on the compressors. Eaton also sells them and they seam very reasonably priced from Eaton. She also said make sure it is at least 20AMPs for a 5HP. Their NIDEC 5HP that comes on their 80 Gallon 5HP Inline 2 stage sells for $325 plus tax. NIDEC Corperation makes a lot of industrial type equipment and are based in Japan. I think I'm going to pick up their 5HP Inline 2 stage and their 5HP motor to use on the 80 gallon Kellogg-American tank I have and then part out on Ebay the old Kellogg 321 pump I have. |

I have a 5 hp Eaton compressor that I have been using for about 10 yrs now.
It's been a real work horse with no problems. And the 5 hp motor on it makes other 5 hp motors look tiny. the motor is almost 100 lbs. One of the things that impressed me into buying it. The CFM output on my 5 hp is higher than Home Depot's 7.5 hp. JC.

Our new Eaton compressor has been great. The motor on my 7.5 single phase unit is large but very quiet. Since installing this compressor and new LED shop lights my average shop electric bill has fallen about $100 a month.

i was hoping some one would build a compressor from this Pump.

I don't know much about them, but I thought you had to match the RPM to the pump.

Eaton has this, I guess it would be called a philosophy, of using higher rated pumps with slower less h.p. motors. For example my Eaton is a 10 h.p. rated pump driven by a 7.5 h.p motor. Megan there at Eaton even told me I could step up to a 10 h.p. motor down the road if I wanted to..... Again, I'm no air technology guy on this either but I think you end up with quieter, more efficient, longer lived compressor is they are underdriven like this.
That is our exact pump shown by Doright there.... Metal, wood, fiberglass, we work it all... www.furniturephysicians.com We can restore the irreplaceable!

Its a Big ol Ugly thing @ 450-500lbs and I am driving it with a True 220 volt 5 hp motor Without problems at this time. I found out it helps a lot if you use the Unloader valve to start it in the mornings! lol once its up and running its fine. I am running it slower with the 5hp motor but it should out last me and puts out plenty of air to run all my tools and my Sand blasters even with the 40 gal tank I have it on now. I do have my eye on a 120 gal Tank a friend of mine has in his back yard he has said I could have it but I have to go get it lol and thats gonna be a trick. Its BIG and Heavy. Once I get it though I should have one Heck of a Good compressor to last a Life time. Dennis B.
