Hi Guys,

Anyone heard of or used a Sanborn compressor?? I saw a 80 gal 2 stage rated at 5.2hp putting out 17cfm at 175 psi. I know they all over rate the numbers but this souns decent for running a spray gun. I thought it would be an overseas brand but a quick search found it is made by Colman in MN. I would assume that it has Chicom made parts and maybe assembled here though (??). I know this would be a big upgrade from my current 30 gal portable but, at around $1500, is it a good deal for what it is? Keeping in mind, it is only me using it, a DA sander for a bit and then the actually spraying--ultimately, I want to spray a complete car but that is a few yr down the road--for now, it will only be bike parts and my 20 gal 5 hp Devilbiss seems to be working for that (not so much for the DA sander though, LOL). Thoughts?

I believe Coleman bought them out a few years back.

If it is a TRUE 5 h.p. then yes, those figures are correct. You might try and see this spec. on it.... it should draw 40 to 48 amps on start up and calm down to 24 amps when running. That's a lot of bucks for used compressor. Eaton has that same model/output starting around $1900 new with a 5 year warranty..... just sayin'

O.K. I'll look for more specs but, that $1500 was what I seen it on sale new for in a recent listing. I had never heard of Sanborn before--figured it was import.

Sanborn's were made here in the US originally however I think the last ones were coming from overseas. I do believe they have always had quite a bit of foreign content in them. They always had a decent rep. for reasonably price stuff and were indeed owned by Coleman in the end. If they haven't sold it yet offer them $1000 and see what they say.

NO, it's not. You can buy a brand new equivalent quality compressor for about $1000 at Tractor Supply. If $1500 is in the budget for used, look at the Eaton 5HP 80 Gallon for around$1600 "Brand New". It has stainless disc valves that are rebuildable, instead of reed valves. Also, look at what the RPM is of the pump when it produces the desired CFM. Better compressors produce the high CFM but at slower pump and motor speeds. A 1725 RPM motor turning a quality pump at 700 to 800 RPM is a lot quitter and will last a lot longer than a motor spinning at 3500 RPM and a pump that is screaming.

I'll check the specs for sure. I don't know where it got confused but, the one I am looking at is NEW, not used.

Well, I may have caused that confusion because, at least to my knowledge, Sanborn went out of business like 10 to 20 years ago. Just checked real quick again and I'm not seeing them as an active manufacturer now..... Oddly, enough I did find this....
