Hi Guys,
Starting to look for a better compressor. This is a Dewalt vertical model with the following specs:
2 Stage
60 Gallon Tank
175 Max PSI
15.3 CFM @ 100 PSI
767 Pump RPM
230V, single phase motor
5 RHP
I checked my guns and it will be more than enough (I think, by 10% over the min.) It might even be just O.K. for my DA sander. Thought about the specs??
2 Stage 60Gal 15.3SCFm Enough??

That should work fine for painting.
It's barely enough to run air sanders. JC.
(It's not custom painting-it's custom sanding) |

If you plan on doing more projects, I would highly recommend getting the best compressor you can afford. Something slightly bigger with more HP and CFM if you can do it.
These are the specs for mine and it's the smallest I would recommend for a 1 man shop. Works fine for everything but continuous sandblasting. 1968 Coronet R/T

i have never heard or read someone say things like:
" i should have built my shop smaller." " i should have insulated less." "i should have added a smaller electrical panel." "i should have added less lighting." "i should have bought a smaller compressor." i have read and heard things like: "i should have bought a larger compressor....." |

Quick thought, would a single stage unit with more CFM and hp. be better than a 2 stage with slightly less cfm? Here are the specs on King Industrial 60 gal unit. I'm assuming that it is imported--how do they compare to Dewalt? MOTOR (PEAK): 6.5 HP FACTORY PRESSURE SETTING (ADJUSTABLE UP TO): 95-125 PSI (150 PSI) MAXIMUM PRESSURE: 150 PSI AIR DELIVERY @ 40 PSI: 22.6 CFM AIR DELIVERY @ 100 PSI: 18.5 CFM TANK SIZE: 60 Gallon MOTOR AMPERAGE: 23 Amp. RPM: 3,450 VOLTAGE: 208/240V, 1 phase, 60 Hz ASSEMBLED DIMENSIONS (LXWXH) / WEIGHT: 31" x 20" x 67" / 280 lbs What I find interesting is the rpm that this operates at....3450 compared to the 2 stage Dewalt at 767 rpm--am I missing something? |
I don't honestly know if the higher rpm will be harmful or not. Maybe someone with a little more knowledge will chime in.

You do not want a single stage compressor....they are working much harder and developing a lot of heat the more they run. I can comment somewhat on these higher rpm motors. You do NOT want one just from a noise/harmonics point of view. Look at that horsepower rating on that unit. Notice it says PEAK horsepower.....well, that aint' right, probably more like 4 running horsepower, if that. They are also saying 23 amps of what?, running continuously or "kick on" amperage??? And, 280 pounds for a 60 gallon compressor???? Probably an all aluminum pump setup = more heat..... more moisture.... My 7.5 horsepower Eaton 80 gallon weighs 750 pounds.....
Hmmmm....just noticed this....the spec.s for this same compressor are very different from store to store... MOTOR (PEAK)6.5 HP FACTORY PRESSURE SETTING (ADJUSTABLE UP TO)95-125 PSI (Max. 135 PSI) AIR DELIVERY @ 40 PSI 13.4 CFM AIR DELIVERY @ 90 PSI 11.2 CFM TANK SIZE 60 Gallon MOTOR AMPERAGE 15 Amp. RPM 3,450 VOLTAGE 240V, 1 phase, 60 Hz ASSEMBLED DIMENSIONS (LXWXH) / WEIGHT 25" x 22" x 67" / 260 lbs PACKAGE DIMENSIONS (LXWXH) / WEIGHT 31" x 24" x 73" / 270 lbs Metal, wood, fiberglass, we work it all... www.furniturephysicians.com We can restore the irreplaceable!

[quote="DarrelK"]You do not want a single stage compressor....they are working much harder and developing a lot of heat the more they run. /quote]Makes sense, it is running over triple the speed to make a bit more cfm. That cannot be good for longevity let alone the noise and heat, It all makes sense when you put it that way.
