Yeah, that is a great example. You were indeed restricting/choking flow before, now you have just "removed" those restrictions letting the max. flow that is available come through. And yes, even within the limits of your max. cfm available there would be "improvements" in your coating process..... Your car engines are just big air pumps which are quite sensitive to both intake and exhaust. You can have a great intake on a motor but literally choke it's full performance with a poor exhaust system.....

How can these "professional" guns run at such low cfm's? You have to be sacrificing something, right?

Who said they're professional guns? If you visit a few paint shops you'll see 90% Devilbiss, Iwata and SATA. The other 10% tend to vary by country/region, for example in Asia you'll see more Star, in Europe some of the Italian brands. For that kind of money you can get big brand guns and pros generally won't touch anything else - they're livelihood depends on consistent, reliable quality.

I'm not saying they're poor quality - there are a lot of guns like these is the mid-range.

9.5cfm isn't that low. Most of my guns run at around that.

First, Eastwood is, well, Eastwood. I am not going to say anything bad about them but as said by Chris, pro stuff???? Not so much. In my opinion they kind of shoot for the middle of the newbie guys. They have their label put on a lot of equipment you could pick up cheaper under the original brand/packager. I'd also agree with Chris on the cfm thing. I'd say 9.5 is very much in the middle nowadays. I've got a couple of LVLP guns that are down in the 5 to 7 cfm range.

What I didn't mention is price.

If you go back to my post on the first page I suggested an Iwata W400. Same price as the Eastwood gun but no contest on performance and quality.

welp, as with many things, eastwood probably doesnt have a manufacturing plant kickin out spray guns. they probably source them from another manufacturer- to their specs.
what are those specs? i dont know.
what i do know is that the 3 mentioned above are ones i dont think ive read of people having problems with the guns themselves.
im not sure if sata and iwata have entry level guns like devilbiss has in the startingline guns, but i would stay away from them- unless spraying primer. i started with a startline gun set. the atomization wasnt good. when i moved up to a finishline for bc/cc, the results were much better (less OP and more consistent fan pattern) and when i moved up to a copper tekna- DAMMMM!!!
quality comes at a price. that quality makes the job much more gooder.

You wont talk bad about them BUT I will! LOL Over priced! rebranded reseller.
Avoid! almost everything they sell can be purchased some place else cheaper!

They have sponsored some great how too videos though with some very talented PRO Technicians using their products. REMEMBER these are PAID FOR ADVERTISEMENTS!
A real pro can work with sub quality and get quality results almost every time they have in most cases learned things the Hard way.
There aint nothing bad about learning the Hard way just remember the Journey to Professional quality anything is Paved by mistakes, Learning from those mistakes and learning how to fix those mistakes.

Just because you Have a Top quality tool of any sort DOSE NOT guaranty quality results!
You can Take any Hi quality Top of the line spray gun Put it in the Hands of a Newb and he wont get quality results! You can take a POS Elcheapo Harbor freight gun put it in a Professional painters Hands and He will get quality results albeit he will probably complain about it in every detail about why its such a POS! and want his IWATA, SATA or ? Back!

That said getting back to the original post idea of what Air System to buy?
Air is the Heart of Any Automotive shop even more so for anyone planning on doing any sort of Automotive refinishing. Buy the Biggest Baddest Air compressor, Piping regulator air filter water drier you can possibly afford as it will be with you for years to come better to have more Air than you need now and grow into it than need bigger down the road!

If you have too small of a system now when your ready & wanting or needing different tools that need more air latter down the road your in big trouble because when you first started you convinced your self smaller was ok and you'll get by with it for now, Now not only do you still need the new tool that uses more air but you'll also need the bigger Air compressor/System to run it. Its a Catch22 deal most of us have been their at one point or another.

The Price between a entry level And Dam good will always be double or Triple But is always cheaper to do right the first time.

Just Like You can Not save money Painting a car yourself! Their is way to much to buy and to much to learn to pull it off. Saving money painting cars yourself doesn't happen till your 6-7th car MAYBE! if you learn quick and buy the right stuff to begin with.
