Compressor....Ingersol Rand Or Husky?

Hi Guys,

One last question....if the specs are very similar on an 80 gal 2 stage unit and the prices are similar, it seems to me that the Ingersol Rand unit is probably the better choice. New unit. Oh, and the IR one is 100% duty cycle...not sure of the Husky. Thoughts?

So it's kind of a "mixed bag" between these guys. Ingersoll Rand still claims to assemble USA Made compressors here in the US however it looks like on their more consumer based stuff I am seeing imported Chinese parts. That is not unusual though as a lot of big compressor builders do get their parts contracturally from overseas. So Husky is now part of the Campbell Hausfield entity with the overlords of finance of Bershire Hathaway being their owner. Husky makes no bones about it....their consumer lines come directly from China and India and are NOT made here in the US.
Personally, I think Ingersoll Rand still has an industrial reputation to protect with their products. I do know several guys that have them and they have needed little service over the years. The large plastics plant that I worked in back when I was in college had several two story size Ingersoll compressors which were on 24/7 running 3 shifts for 30 to 60 days at a time. In the 3 years or so that I worked there they were only ever down for routine maintenance. Buddy of mine has a 20 year old model 5 hp upright 60 gallon Ingersoll and he's done nothing but maintenance on it as well. He knocks out a couple of project cars a year.... I think I'd go Ingersoll and buy any optional warranties as a backup plan....

It all makes sense. My gut tells me that the IR unit is a better deal. I'm sure I don't need the 100% duty cycle but who knows what I might get into over the next few yrs.

Well, I finally pulled the trigger and spent more than I wanted but, I know I will be better off in the long run. Bought the IR 80 gal 2 stage unit. Plumbed it today and wired it up. Only let it fill up and set pressure on my filters and adjusted it at the gun. This may sound crazy but it doesn't sound as loud as my little 5hp/20 gal Devilbiss portable--definitely not louder. At any rate, I am happy so far. I will try to shoot some primer this weekend.

Just curious, do you guys release the air if you are going to use the comp. in the next day or so or is it safe just to open the drain valve to check for water before you use it in the next day or so?

Keep the tank pressurized, it fatigues the tank metal to
change the pressure back and forth on a daily basis.
It's also less work on the motor to keep it full.

^^^^^^^^^ Same here, always told to "load" the tank and keep it loaded. About 30 years of using the 60 to 80 gallon size compressors, no leaks.... I do have my auto drain valve also on an external timer, turns on in the morning about a half hour before we get in and turns off about a half hour after we leave. I think I have it set to drain at 45 minute intervals....

O.K. that's good to know then. I don't have an auto drain but I did install an extended drain valve so I don't have to crawl underneath it to drain it.

Yeah, I used to run a manual one. The new style ones are pretty cheap insurance....

They are over on ebay as well at about $27 or so...

Now I was told the exact opposite. To drain the tank after every use because the air will condense and the water will sit at the bottom of the tank and rust the tank.

Congrats on new Compressor! I love my IR
I been told same drain daily But doesn't mean you have to blow your tank to zero either just drain the water. I like the Auto drain systems worth every penny, Hook it up forget about it.

My Biggest worry now is age of the Tank itself Its seriously just a Matter of time they all rust out and can fail spectacularly taking out what ever is around them at the time.
