What is a safe solvent I can spray through gun to closely set my spray pattern? I know paint will spray a little different but I don't want to waste paint dialing in the pattern if I don't have to.

Use water. Its viscosity is similar to reduced basecoat. It's also relatively cheap. Just make sure that you flush the gun, when finished with lacquer thinners.
