For getting down through layers of paint, what type of disk?

I watch auto repair shows a lot and I've seen lots of disks used for cleaning metal, sanding down weld beads and cutting through paint to metal or at least down to solidly adhered paint. What works well? 3M Roloc Bristle disks? Those disks that look like scotch brite material in steroids? Flap disks?

Won't that leave a lot of straight scratch marks?

I have been using these on the air tool below.
They are cheap but effective.

If you want to remove paint, without damaging the metal, then the paint stripping discs are the best. If you want to sand the metal, like cleaning up welds and the like, then those little discs go alright.

I am not a fan of that stripping machine Wireburn posted as the Stripping Drum rolls are too expensive. I prefer a Stripping Disk made by 3M with a Velcro attachment used on a Harbor frieght adjustable speed Buffer/Grinder.

I get those Pads in 6 inch and 8 inch they make quick work of Paint and Filler I can usually strip most all of a car with one disk. a 6 inch pad is like $18 bucks,

For Rust and Weld bead I use the Die grinder and those 2 inch Sanding disks 68 posted Zirconia the way to go in 36 grit. I use the heck out of them and usually buy them by the box of 50 You can also get them in the same material as that large 3M disk they work well for fine sanding and cleaning.
