If you sanded the clear coat, the color should stick just fine.
One of the issues with rattle cans is the coverage isn't near what it is out of a spray gun. The coats are thinner, therefore two or three coats of clear are very easy to sand through.

Great thanks - the paint job is getting a LOT better after sanding down the previous rough base coat surface.

I'm getting a hang of using the spray can now (spray close to the surface).

I've also just learnt that I shouldn't really touch the surface for at least more than an hour or perhaps longer after I've put on a good two layers of clear. I briefly touched the clearcoat around an hour time after application and my fingerprint was clearly marked on the clearcoat.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Base coat in a can?
I never heard of that.
Is this really base coat or just normal spray paint in a can?
JC.

(It's not custom painting-it's custom sanding)

It's just spray paint in a can.

So far the side mirror looks fine after repainted and clearcoated.

Have a follow-up question:

after I was done with the clearcoat for a couple of days, I noticed one area of clearcoat wasn't enough as it didn't looky shiny. So I wet sanded the clearcoat slightly, and reapplied clearcoat.

Would that work?

After I wet sanded the clearcoat, there were still some spots where it looked slightly shiny.

Would the new clearcoat stick fine over that slightly shiny area of older clearcoat?

Things look fine so far, but I just wonder if the new clearcoat over the older clearcoat would last, or it might peel off eventually from the older clearcoat.

Thanks.
