I am planning to paint my lawn mower with a aerosol 2K direct gloss Kawasaki green but I wanted to know if I can get away with just a zinc primer and then the 2K direct gloss or will I need a base coat as well??

No basecoat needed at all, if using a single stage paint.

Thanks for that. What is the basecoat for then?

Maybe a little definition of terminology.....
Basecoat or base coat: is the colour that goes under clear coat. Primer goes under the base coat or under the 2K Direct Gloss 2K Direct Gloss is a topcoat that does the job of both basecoat and clear, in that it is coloured and gives a lasting shiny finish. Without knowing what kind of "zinc primer" you're using I'd be reluctant to say whether it will work or not. Zinc primers are not commonly used in automotive work so if it comes from a different manufacturer, or even a different product line it may not be suitable. Certainly you do need a primer, but best to get one that comes from the same brand/family as the 2K DG that you're using. If you use the correct primer then spraying your 2K DG over it will be fine.
