Anybody know a shop in Oregon that will do full body paint? I'm very frustrated, as I called SIXTY FOUR places yesterday and they're just interested in turn and burn, get 'em in and get 'em out collision jobs.

Is it because I'm calling them and telling them that I have a car from the 1980's that I want to paint the same color and this spooks them like there is some crazy underlying mess under there? I'm the second owner and it is straight as hell.

Of the 64 places, maybe 5 would consider it but 3 of the 5 of them wanted $15k and up.

I mean c'mon man......I don't want Maaco, but I don't want Barrett Jackson either. I know paint prices per gallon are up but I mean c'mon, can someone give me advice?

To help a shop be more comfortable with considering the job, I have removed the cladding, window trim, door handles, bumpers, side mirrors, emblems, headlights, tail lights, door gaskets, sunroof gaskets, EVERYTHING. I just want them to fill 18 little rock chips I have around the body instead of painting over them. Why is this so difficult? What ever happened to the "ya just get your car repainted, no big deal" thing, or was everyone in those days taking it to Maaco?

i feel for you, but thats the way it is now. way more money in repairs than overalls. my boy works at Sandy Auto Body and he is backed up about 20 some cars. your best bet would be to try and find an independent like most of us, i did this for about 40+ years. i would ask for REFERANCES as quality and prices can be from one extreme to the other. GOOD LUCK!

Maybe see if you can rent a paint booth and then shoot it yourself?

The problem with hiring someone to "paint it your way" is that they know ultimately their name and reputation will be attached to the paint job.

Body shops make more money on dents and collision than they do doing complete paint jobs. I am also not surprised at all at $15000 quote for a complete paint job, completes are labor intensive and time consuming. They loose there Butts on completes.

Telling them you don't need a perfect paint job just throws up Red flags! (a customer to stay away from!!!)
It means and says I want a perfect paint job cheap and will sue you when I get it back and its not perfect.

One "BIG" thing working against you is ... You're speaking via a phone and what you're saying and asking for is the complete opposite of what they're thinking. That's just school of thought for the industry. They've been down that road before and they steer clear. Not worth the headaches or lawsuit that might follow.

For reference, I recently (6 months ago) had a 2005 limited edition Dodge Ram Daytona Quad cab repainted staying with it's original color which is Go-Mango orange (light metallic). Not a small truck at all, it too is 100% rust free (garaged), perfectly straight with the exception of one dime size ding on the hood from a tree branch yrs ago.

Knowing that 98% of all body shops pay their bills from insurance claims I knew it would be best if I spoke with someone face-to-face (more personal) so they could actually see it and understand what I was expecting. They also knew that time was not an issue to a degree and that the truck would be totally stripped of everything; i.e., bumpers, side body skirts, mirrors, lights, badging, trim/molding, handles, plastic inner wheel wells ect.

We shook on $7000 including a spray-on bed liner that was painted to match. No corners were cut and it looks as if it came off the show room floor once again :)

Simply put..I think you'll have better luck if you're able to put a few things back on the vehicle in order to drive it and visit them personally. This will put you both on equal ground.

Hope this makes sense.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ See, that's a reasonable situation there..... He took the time to do a face to face and "clicked" with the right person/shop that saw what they had to work with and each party understood what they were supposed to do. I hate to say it but phone calls anymore are just about worthless when you are talking about a "project" style job. In wood restoration we actually have better luck with someone emailing me and sending me pic.s of their situation, then I can pick and choose what I want to follow up with a possible face to face meet or inspection.

the same response would come in construction.
say ya wanted a deck built. a construction company more than likely wont give a price over the phone. why? too many variables. they are going to want to visit the site. theyre going to want to know what they are working with. then they are going to want to see the blueprints so they know what the final outcome is to be. typically a builder had a set sq ft price but has to see the prints to see anything extra.
toss out a number without seeing jobsite and blueprints then construction company loses their arse when they find out the deck is over a walkout, radiused outside corners, double curved staircases, metal and wood railing...deck surface isnt pressure treated?? cypress with hidden fasteners??

painters gotta see what they are working with before giving an estimate. i have a feeling they dont do estimates for insurance work without seeing the vehicle, too.

Rather than call around Put it on a trailer and tow it around to different shops getting estimates you'll probably have better luck.

Stop calling body shops. For a full repaint you need to search for "custom shops", or hot rod shops. They specialize in custom work and restoring old cars. Body shops do not want this type of business, as you have found out.
