Howdy.
Doing a full resto on a medium sized vehicle. Here is what I have done so far.
Strip to bare metal.
Matrix MP-124 Sealer\primer, light scuff
Matrix 2KPB high build primer; block sanded
Paint vendor flaked out on me and switched to "Wanda" brand (http://www.rlpaintproducts.com/products.aspx); so I have purchased the following in Nason.
BC
One gal mixed, BC/CC base
2 quarts (2 different accent colours) mixed, BC/CC base
1 gal "ful-Base" medium reducer 441-21
1 pint activator 483-30
CC
1 gal 498-00 Overall clear
1 QT 483-78 activator
Observations: The wrap stickers placed on the BC cans say "Ful-Base B/C" They do not say "Ful-Thane" BUT the invoice says "Ful-Thane"
The mix sticker on all 3 cans of the BC states 430 toners and 435 binders
I located the datasheet matching the mix sticker (http://pc.dupont.com/dpc/en/US/html/vis ... secoat.pdf)
CC
My painter buddy states to pitch the CC and step up to DuPont ChromaClear...
Questions:
Did I get Enamel or Urethane BC?
Any issues spraying over Matrix Urethane 2K? (I assume not with proper surface prep)
My painter buddy states I purchased Enamel; but I need to know before I make a fool of myself at the pait suppliers Monday. (I am going to swap the Nason clear for the DuPont)
What clear should I ask for?
Thank in advance
School me on Nason "Ful-Base"

well the 483-30 is the correct activator for your full- base b/c .(its 483-15 for full-thane urathane s/s) as for clear its kind of a crap shoot i use to use chroma clear 7800s. but i don't think they make it any more and it was very spendy. on my last few job have been using limco lc4200. anyway you need to take all your information to your paint suplier and say explain this to me! and don't leave untill you have all your answers and get data sheets for everything.i have allso used the nasons clear and it seemed to work good. when you ask for chroma- clear be sure and ask how much first unless money is no problem i think the old 7800s was close to 250.00- 300.00 a gal with activator

Yes; I saw that as well; and why I was confused. I did verify that the activator matches the BC; but still cannot locate if it is Urethane or Enamel. My painter buddy stated "Nason Urethane mixes 1 to 1; so one gallon of base shoots 2 gallons mixed; their enamel mixes one gallon of paint with one quart of activator for 5 quarts" .. "You bought Enamel" As for the clear; I will spend the $$; we have high temps and UV load here and this is resto will be a keeper.. |

I've used the 498 clear for some time now and really like it being's it's an economy clear, never really cared for the nason fulthane basecoat though! i've used all the top of the line clears ($$$$) and have settled in with the 498!! Just my two cents

The binder determines what type of paint it is with Nason. So which 435 binder is on the label?

All B/C mix stickers have: 435-93 basecoat fixers So; it looks like it is a Urethane. The wraparound sticker threw me for a loop. Additionally my painter buddy's comment about one to one ratio for the BC paniked me.. Has Nason changed formula from a one to one to a 8-4-1/2 for what I have purchased? |

the nasons base coat mixes as
8oz catalyst per gal base coat this can be reduced 50 -100 % with the correct temp reducer pot life is 4hrs. |
That reduction dont sound right for some reason. Ya better check it.
I sprayed Nason base coat one time,,,It SUX! It was a light metallic blue and was VERY easy to streak. You have to jack your air up to 50-55lbs to get rid of it............ Ill never use it again! |

Thanks for you comments. This is a non metallic paint, medium blue over a grey primer. I have seem 3 comments about Nason and coverage. I had planned to use matrix but could no longer source it. I mixed some of the blue 1-1 with straight reducer and sprayed a piece of masking paper. Paper is light colored (Buff) but it covered OK. I have no idea if it will outlast me BUT I plan to use Dupont Clear and return the Nason. Matrix carried a Euro high solids clear which was my 1st plan.. As for the mixing comment: From the datasheet: http://pc.dupont.com/dpc/en/US/html/vis ... secoat.pdf MIXING & REDUCING: 8:1⁄2:4 8 parts Ful-Base® B/C Basecoat Colour 1⁄2 part Ful-Base® 483-30TM B/C Activator 4 parts Ful-Base® 441-2XTM Reducers Example: To one gallon of Ful-Base® B/C Basecoat Colour, add 1⁄2 pint of Ful-Base® 483-30TM B/C Activator. Reduce with 2 quarts Ful-Base® 441-2XTM Reducers. We will be shooting in 60 degree temps.I picked up medium reducer. Any real world suggestions for ratios of reducer to paint? I assume not to tinker with the catalyst.. |
