Can Nason 483-78 Mid-Temp activator be used in the Nason Ful-Base tinted to a gold metallic. The Ful-Base calls for 483-30 activator. 483-78 is a clear base activator, but I only need about 1/2 ounce of activator for my base coat and I don't want to buy another can of base activator if I don't have to. Or, is it ok to not to use an activator as I have done with non-mtalic base coats before clear coating?

You asked,,"Or, is it ok to not to use an activator?" No ,,you dont have to use it.

What are the ramifications to not using activator with Ful-Base? Does it affect the following?

Time between coats?
Window for clear?
Ultimate durability?
Anything else?

Thanks much.

Some folks like to add a bit of activator to basecoat. If you need to repair a flaw in the base, the activator helps to prevent a reaction with the newly sprayed basecoat (lifting). I doubt if it improves durability, although since the basecoat is crosslinked it might be more chip-resistant...

Talk about digging up an old Thread :allgood:

I have been told and have read the same thing as what Night train said.

I have been told to add 1 once per Cup of mixed Base coat or One cap full of the Clear coat to be used activator per mixed Cup of Base coat at least by one Paint mfg Tech although the printed instructions said nothing about it at the time. The base coat and Clear were both from same mfg.

I don't know personally how much should be added to Nason but I would like to know.

I believe the activator in the base is to promote adhesion with the clear. the base activator is different than the clear activator. there teck sheet says to use activator in the base. I don't use much Nasons clear other than the 496 spot panel clear.

thats exactly why you add hardener to basecoat, so it crosslinks with the clear giving you a stronger paint job. no they did not do it incase you burn through and screw up.

if you add activator to your base do it in only what you intend to spray because this will give your basecoat a pot life. i do not activate my base normally. depends on the job really

If you do not activate your base and you burn thru, your recoat can wrinkle up your base. It will look like you put paint stripper on the break thru edges.
