Yeah i now it's a bit of a risk but i'm kinda on a budget with this one. I will defenitly get one of them orbital sanders if I do this again.

Dual action, meaning that you can set it to grind with the disc spinning or set it to orbit randomly.

I thought dual action meant only that it's random orbit, referring to the dual movements that prevent it from leaving little circular swirls like an orbital?

Orbital is orbital. As far as I have always understood "DA" is "dual action". Do some detective work over at some of the air tool sites maybe you can come up with the proper answer?

I think random orbital is dual action. The dual action refers to the fact that the shaft that drives it spins the pad on it (action 1), and the pad spins freely in an eliptical motion (action 2). Orbital doesn't rotate just spins the pad around in tight circles with no free spinning parts and thus no randomness (leaving circles in the peice). And rotary just spins the pad on the shaft. I'd look it up but I'm 97-98% sure I'm right, and I'm lazy.

Well, I guess I'm coming in a little late on this one. Anyhow, I voted.

DA sander works pretty good for speed process. It can easily removes scrathes from hand sanded. I use this a lot in the shop.

Apparently I seem to be doing something wrong. I used 400 grit 3M wet/dry paper to sand my surfacer and I can see the sanding scratches plain as day through the base coat. So much so that I think I'm going to have to redo the base. I sanded a piece with 600 grit and I swear to god I can see those too. Is it some wierd 3M paper thing or do I have Super Eyes?

use mirka sandpapers. works pretty good. 500-600 grit should do the job before sealer and basecoat.
