I am preparing to primer a 1994 dodge dakota extended cab. The truck has a bed liner so I won't be spraying the bed. I was planning to use 2K High Build Urethane Primer Surfacer w/ Activator and I am trying to determine how much I need. Would one quart do the job? I am using a canister type sprayer for the primer application. I am not sure the tip size. I have also ordered the harbor freight hvlp purple gun which has a 1.4mm tip I believe.
Thanks
How much primer do I need?

Need some more information.
Is this a repaint over existing paint? Are you spraying over bare metal? Are you planning to block sand the panels straight? High Build will most likely mix 4:1 so a gallon will get you 5 quarts RTS (ready to spray). That should get you 3 coats on the truck using 1.8 to 2.0 tip size. Trying to spray high build with anything less will be a royal pain. 1968 Coronet R/T

Another question that isn't clear to me is whether I need the high build primer vs a non-sanding primer. The high build primer is twice the cost of the non-sandable primer. |
Can't answer your questions until you answer mine.
What exactly are you trying to do? 1968 Coronet R/T

Answers to your questions:>
Is this a repaint over existing paint? > Existing paint. I have sanded down the entire truck. Are you spraying over bare metal? > Just a few small spots where I sanded through to metal. Mostly, the surface is the existing paint and primer. Are you planning to block sand the panels straight? > Not sure what this means??? I had two small spots that I filled in with body filler and sanded even. |

I painted my 96 dakota a while back so i know about how much ull need. If ur doin the whole truck ul need 1 gal and ul have sum left over. Paint and clear a gallon too. U really dont have to prime the whole thing but you could if u want. If u reduce the primer and use it as a sealer ull hav left over for oyher jobs. Id just use it as sealer anywhere u didnt do bodywork and itll save some sanding.
Dont buy that hf gun. Get the one that comes in the two piece kit, its like the only good one they have but ul never need the touch up gun it comes with. It also comes with a 1.3 and 1.8 tip for primer. Use the 1.8 if u dont reduce the primer. Use the 1.3 for base and clear. |
I have a '93 Dakota that I'm trying to prolong having to refinish as long as possible... Dreaded peeling clear coat everywhere.
You will need a gallon kit of primer, a gallon kit of paint, and another gallon kit of clear (if using BC + CC). If you buy less than a gallon, you end up paying just as much for the ~3 quarts it would take to have a good safety margin of not running out. |
