Even using a stud gun you'll still have the crater effect of a high
area around the dent. But it's usually low enough that the filler
will more than make up for it.
I have fixed a few like your picture, I usually fill the ones I can see and let
the primer take care of the rest. Poly primer works good for a
good blocking after filling.
