I'm a new member here and thx for adding me to the group. I have what a lot of shops would call a nightmare. I'm in the process of painting a 57 ford truck that I've had down to the metal so all the epoxy, highbuild primer and bodywork and sealer are all new material. Problem I'm into is my customer insists on a flat clear and I've been fighting this thing for 2 weeks and its one thing after another. First try was flattening agent in the clear, I quickly figured out that that's not the look we're looking for (too much texture) so I purchased enough PPG 2060 to spray the whole truck. Well after spraying the bed it looked awesome. Went to check on it the next day and the picture tells the tale. I haven't seen this for 20+ years when you try to spray lacquer over enamel. I have only 2 conclusions, 1. the paint underneath wasn't 100% cured even after 30 minutes. 2. The 2060 was too thick in the areas that this happened. I only sprayed 2 coats like the mfg recommends but seams and recessed areas are super hard to get clear to lay down without using more than on a flat panel. It also did very similar cracking in seams and recessed bodylines. I've looked every were for answers and nada.

Welcome. See my signature below, for instructions about how to post pictures.
Guessing the paint wrinkled on you? If you list exactly all the products you used from metal on up (including cleaners), maybe someone might have an idea. |

Only happened in this one spot this bad. The other locations were in the creases and it ran along them. I was told by a painter that uses only PPG that the base wasn't dry in those areas. Makes sense because this only happened in higher build areas.

Thx for the input Painter Dave, Granted here in SE Texas we don't have the VOC compliant standards that there are in Denver and it's hotter and more humid so the D8115/D8117 is not as popular but is available. This being said can you share some wisdom with this product line applications. Like, How does it react with solvent base materials (even though Spec. sheet says its compatible)? What gun and fluid tip size works best with it (I have a Sata 4000s and a Iwata Supernova)? Any what to do or not to do's when spraying? Whatever information you are willing to share with us may help me or someone else keep from having that WTF moment and is much appreciated. P.S. the 2060 is too expensive to put in the garbage... |

i mix 3:1:1
D8115, D8239, F3350 i only use delfleet reducers, they have 3 times longer evaporation rates then D deries reducers. that stuff will stay wet for you even in texas. put on first coat fairly wet, let flash till dull (this stuff has a killer long window) you CAN dust nib the first coat with 1000 grit if let it flash enough. second coat 70% ish over lap nice and wet but dont run it thats it pretty much. sata 4000 or 5000 1.4 Experienced Trained Certified

The only thing I'm still curious about is it's solvent base materials compatibility? |
