Getting ready to repair a small gouge in the drivers door on my 2007 Dodge Durango. It is the stock Marine Blue Pearl color. I've read a lot about spraying an orientation coat or a wet bed before the color to prevent the halo effect in metallic paint. None of the info I've read lists what this orientation coat is called as far as a product name. I might be mistaken, but I don't think that it's just clear coat. Anybody help a noob out? Thanks in advance!

Yeah, terminology is kind of "loose" in a lot of that stuff you see online and in videos. They are talking about "clear base" or also what we typically call an "intercoat clear." Dave is correctly pointing you to a great base in PPG which is the 500. Pics. would really help.....

The actual body damage is around 18 inches long and 1 inch tall. It is less than 1/8 inch deep. I will also be repairing a small ding by the the door handle.

so yes you will want to sand all your blend panels with 800,

spray light coats of DBC500 on the panels before base coat

You can use intercoat clear for a consistent surface to blend on or you can also use
Bulldog adhesion promoter, it works great. You can add a little base to it or use it
clear.
