Hi

hoping for some advice for a beginner.

I am adding a boot spoiler to my car.
I bought a used spoiler and it is a different colour.

I have scoured the net for instructions on the most basic way to respray it to the colour of my car (metallic maroon) base coat / clear coat but there are so many different opinions. To sand or not to sand the basecoat, to use primer or not to use primer, polish etc etc.

Could someone please be so good as to help with a few basic steps to respray my "new" boot spoiler to match my car's colour. The used spoiler is yellow paint in good condition. (not metallic)

Can I just give it a light sand to clean it up , spray 2x coats of basecoat and 2x clear coats on top? Do I need to do any sanding in between? I believe i can skip primer?

It does not have to be a Pro job as the car is not new, but still in good nick.

Thanking in advance!

The tech sheet on any brand of base coat i've checked says to never sand it.
It's ok to remove a defect like a bug but you must rebase over that.

All you need to repaint that spoiler if it's in good shape is to clean it real good,
sand it to 600 grit and spray it. I like spraying a couple coats of an adhesion
promoter (like Bulldog brand) first just to smooth everything out and increase
adhesion, but it's not really necessary.

(It's not custom painting-it's custom sanding)

in your post you say used then new then used, I understand its used but new to you ?
if it has good paint now do as JC said and sand with 600 then I would use a sealer or maybe the Bulldog then your base. the reason for the sealer is that you don't know what type of paint the yellow is and there is the possibility the base may start to lift it. its probably remote but something to think about. when you go to get your paint see if you can take something off of the car to show them the color or drive the car to them. I would suggest an autobody supply jobber in your area the will be able to match the alternates to your color. this will help color match as your not blending anything.
