Hello Group,
First time post Hobbyist and fuzzy on how to ask my question. What I've got is a British car from 1952 that has had 2 color changes here in the states over the years. I'm trying to remove the top layers of the glove box door to get the original color so I can take it to the paint shop to get a color match of the original car color, which I want when I'm done.

How much does the shop need to have exposed to get a good color sample. How can I get the top layers off without the base color being removed. I'm asking before I go at it with solvents or a paper or ?

Doesn't the car have a body tag with a paint code?

What Make and Model is it?

Shouldn't be to hard to find out what color options were available that year.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the responses. It is a early 1952 Morris Minor convertible that I'm restoring. The body tag code does say mist green but how do I get that color in a modern paint? I was thinking if the paint shop could do a scan of the glove box lid then they could make a match to the original on the part. The info I find is it was a synthetic paint, not sure what that means. They also had a Empire green later in production, but again not sure what shade it is vs the Mist green. No examples that tell me to use XXX paint in this color or code. so that's why the question.
I'm kind of long winded but hopefully I have given enough info to help.

Have you tried something simple like this...... http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/ Just punch in the info. and you should get directed on the paint needed. Personally on the truly old stuff like this I don't like the idea of scanning a paint like this because of the usual amount of UV degradation and color shift that "original" paint may have seen before it was overcoated with later paints. I mean, generally people coat over those paints for either a color change or because the paint is beginning to fade/fail.

Mist Green shows up as ICI code 2383, and ICI is now owned by Akzo Nobel.
Used on 50-52 Morris cars.
Not sure what synthetic of that period means, maybe acrylic lacquer or alkyd enamel?
If you want the old 'look', I'd probably paint it with acrylic enamel (or a SS urethane),
whichever is available.
It should be an easy code to replicate, let us know what you find out...

Hi Guys,
Night Train, you are awesome. Where did you find this to figure out this data? Badsix, I am a member of the MM forum and it has never been worked out with more then one conversation over time. This is great information.

MrFixIt, I doubt if the ICI code I dug up will help you. I couldn't cross reference
the code number with anything that's produced today. However....
Glasurit shows 5 codes for green through those model years, but none are listed
as Mist Green. There's a Forest Green, and the other greens have codes differing
by 1 digit so they're all very similar and I'll bet one is your 'Mist' Green.

I lost the link but look on Glasurit's website under classic cars.
