Last year I bought a (new) replacement bumper that came in bare metal.

I prepped it by doing the following:

After less than a year, large spots have peeled or flaked off which leads me to believe my prep was insufficient. However, I'm not sure what I've missed. Didn't hit enough of the areas with the sander mabye? Didn't wait long enough after the first primer coat? I'm pretty sure I timed it, but I must have done something wrong...

I should clarify that this is an old truck and I'm not looking for a perfect finish - just a bumper that won't peel or rust.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Simple aerosol etch from a can right? Simple 1K bedliner aerosol..... I'm surprised it lasted a year. Huge difference in 1k bedliners compared to their 2k brothers. The stuff in the aerosols even says it is more for "touch-ups" on existing bedliners. A lasting job would have been more like epoxy primer as your base and then a 2k bedliner material.

I'm assuming it peeled off the etch primer. etch is really not meant to be top coated with top coat materials, so to speak. you would have been better off putting a sealer coat on the etch then the bed liner. one big problem is your dealing with shaker can materials and longevity is not the best.

Thanks for the reply Jay!

Actually the primer and everything flaked off, leaving bare metal. Could it be my choice of primer?

Strip to metal.
DA with 80 Grit to provide scratch
2 coats of a quality epoxy primer.
Shoot your bedliner (U-Pol Raptor works very well.)

This will last longer than you or I will.
