Just curious if anyone has any specific way of hitting a non-crimped, straight cut edge such as you might find on some motorcycle fenders or if we just accept their being prone to chipping as a fact of life?

Sorry but I don't understand what you are asking.

? fact of life! you could put a real thin strip of the clear bra material over it. I just bought a new car for the wife and it has it on the door edges, folded but you can't hardly see it on there.

If you are talking about deburring the edge of the metal, there are few different ways to it. I sometimes just use a file, but I like using this tool best, if its a longer edge.

Thanks! thats kind of what I thought, I was just doing a harley fender and back end was not rolled. I thought about wrapping a strip or two of 6oz. 'glass cloth on it but in this case it has a chrome extension that screws on there. Had me curious and i thought id ask.
In this case, since its a front fender and has that extension i may just run a little bead of grey permatex on the underside there after assembly to keep it from chipping and protect it from rusting there. Seam sealer seems a little too permanent. |
I made a repair once on a rolled edge, and that's about as much as I would want to do with them.
Seems like you will need some kind of stiffener, is it possible to use a solid rod shaped to the fender and just welded to the inside edge to simulate a rolled edge? |

How about using some car door edge trim? Protects the thin painted edge from chipping, and makes it (slightly) stiller and stronger. Also, it's dirt cheap and very easy to cut and apply.
