I might look closer at factory cars to see if I find what I want and take the code for a mix. I've also seen several HOK Pearl's I like.

The guy at my local supply house has been more than helpful so for now I'll let him take my money. After I'm more familiar with my needs I may switch to online supply. Also, if I always pay cash my wife doesn't know what I have into my project.

for practice, see if your jobber has any mismatched metallics/pearls you can get at discount/cost. you'll still be able to learn how to spray em right even if they arent the same color you plan on using and do it less expensively.

Update.

I picked up a 1/2 pint of Ford Kona Blue pearl. I primed and sanded to 600 a small sheet of 11ga I had laying around. The panel is about 12" x 30". The color is great but there are noticable dark lines across the panel.

I tried to maintain about 6" off the panel and 90* both ways from the panel and 50% or so overlap.

I did notice that when trying to set up the spray pattern it feels like slightly more air pressure at the top and bottom of the fan. Am I looking for a sweet spot on the spray?

I've read mixed reviews about a drop coat but is it reasonable for a newb? Thanks for any input, 1

whats the make and model of the gun youre using?
was the first pass with fan pattern completely on panel or did ya keep 50% off the panel?
what pressure is your reg set at?

did ya use some paper hangin on a wall to set the fan pattern?

I have a Finishline 4 gun
I'm at about 20lbs at the gun with trigger pulled
Yep, started half on the panel

I did shoot a test shot and it looked like a submarine. I thought this was correct but without a history to draw from I'm just assuming it looks ok.

I think I'll do the test again and see if the upper/lower ends have a thicker coating.

Is it typical to be able to adjust the fan pattern and get more pressure at the ends vs smooth all the way across the fan?

Thanks, Abe

I generally start a gun set up by backing the fluid knob out until the trigger can be pulled full open. Then while holding the trigger I turn the fluid know back in until I feel it start to lift my fingers. At this point let go of the trigger and then turn the fluid knob in 1/2 turn more.

Set the air pressure at the gun with the trigger pulled open. 22-23 psi is a good start point for most guns.

Put some mixed paint in the gun and then hold it 6" from the paper. Pull the trigger full open for 1 second and let go. Check the pattern. If the center is wet and runny turn your fluid knob in 1/2 turn and try again. If the center of the pattern is dry then lower your air pressure 2 pounds and try again.

that fl4 sprays pretty good. good fan pattern and atomization. you might find ya need to bump the PSI up some. the fl4 is quite similar to the fl3 IIRC, which i have one of those. i sprayed at 27 psi.
