I don't know were your buying your tape, but you should get it from an autobody jobber. most big box stores won't have the right tape for autobody work.

Thanks Jay.
I ordered two rolls of the 3M Green tape. At $8.75 a roll.

Is there any tape designed or better for use over "fresh" paint where the paint may not be fully cured/hardened? I'm going to need to tape over the fresh paint (well its a week old now) to paint the section above.

The 3M tape is fine its meant to be used on fresh paint I do it all the time.
Your paint has an adhesion issue where the Base coat was applied over substrate that wast improperly prepped OR for some other reason? there are a few other causes.
Many manufactures Paint jobs have had adhesion issues over the years with the new Water born Paint systems.

You can cover it up all you like and cheat the job by just doing a Touch up but the problem will still be there, The first time a car wash pressure washer gets a little too close its gonna peel or blow off.
Many a New painter has had to deal with adhesion issues my learning curve included this fiasco. Nothing more frustrating than doing a nice job that peels off later or like the way you discovered your problem using tape on it.

If it were mine I would hit it with a Hi pressure pressure washer and see where it stops more than likely its all of it. Then prep & repaint as necessary.

With any of the good automotive tapes, 3M, Norton or FBS, you shouldn't have any issues with week old paint.

Don't leave tape on out in the Florida sun for a week.

But as these other guys are trying to tell you, you are concentrating on the wrong issue. Going over a failed coating whether it is a car, boat, house or dog is just asking for more failure.

You are correct good quality automotive Tape Shouldn't have any issues with New or old paint as long as the paint was applied properly.

Oh & No don't ever leave tape on for too long period lol Hard to get off aint it! :rotfl:

I made the mistake of covering fresh New Paint with Frisket paper once to try to protect the panels while assembling a car and leaving it on for a Very long time in hi temperatures it didn't damage the paint just couldn't get it off without a special adhesive solvent, what a mess.

I am repainting all the gold. I will be getting 2 quarts of 3-M (BASF) Diamont tomorrow.

I tested with more Blue tape to see how much more paint would pull off with the tape. Only a little came off - in the same area where I show in the photo. It seems to be well adhered in rest of the gold colored areas.

I sanded all the gold areas with 220 grit, followed by 400 git. I have it all masked again - but I wont be spraying until this weekend. So that means tape will be on for a week. I'm using the blue Norton 1/4" fine-line tape (more like a vinyl tape) at the color change and the 3M Green tape everywhere else.

The RV is parked in the shade but it's still 95 degrees out here in FL. Hopefully the tape will pull off cleanly after a week in the heat.
