I am working on a 1969 Dart. It has a panel called a deck filler panel that goes behind the rear window, in front of the deck lid, and between the quarter panels. At the seams with the quarter panels is seam sealer. Is there a trick to getting thee old seam sealer out? I've wire wheeled the heck out of it, but it is still in there. I want to get it out so I know that the stuff going in is correct.

Heat will help. If you have the car stripped to just metal, apply some heat and it should soften and come out. Then lacquer thinner should remove the rest.

That's about all you can do, you can scrape the crack out with knife or something then just apply your new seam sealer. use a good quality sealer, urethan or two part. I like to epoxy the area before the sealer. I know that some sealers should be put on bare metal but that's just the way I do it. tape both sides of the seam to get a nice smooth line.

I saw somebody mention this on another forum and was amazed at my positive experience.
Oscillating tool at 90 degrees with the thin metal blade/ teeth. For my old vw this chipped off hard pieces and also dug out deep pliable strands completely! |
