Newbie at this and trying to avoid heavy spots while priming my entire truck. I already spayed a gallon of SlickSand and did the guide coat/block sanding steps w/180grit. Next step is a gallon of FeatherFill and guide coat/block sand w/320grit before sealing with 2K.

What is best for a newbie without a very steady hand to use as a tip (1.8 or 2.2mm) for the FeatherFill? I am not great at going slow and steady with my gun and trying to avoid the heavy spots & missed spots that I experienced with the SlickSand. I am getting better each time but this is an art which I am not great at. Thanks!

Hopefully you have removed most of the SlickSand while trying to remove your guide coat. You don't want excessive build with poly primer any more than you do with regular filler.

I use a 1.8 tip with the FeatherFill because that is what I have. It does require some reduction (10% Acetone) to get it to spray properly.

The time to practice a steady spraying technique is now when you plan on sanding things off. Learn to keep the gun perpendicular to the surface, the same distance from the surface, a consistent overlap of at least 50% and then moving at a consistent speed.

Setting the gun up properly is critical as well has having proper air supply (CFM & PSI) and filtration.

Also, don't mix to much at once. I did that the first time I sprayed it and after spraying a full 900cc cup worth, when I went to refill the cup it was already hardening. Not only will it not spray right at that point, it will be difficult to clean the hardened filler from the gun.

Just thought I'd share my mistake so readers know what not to do.

Slicksand sands like Concrete when first opening it up surprised you got it with 180 Had to be a chore!

A whole gallon on it and you wanna do More???? YIKES!, Ya that's a Lot!
The stuff should be used as a thin Skim coat of filler NOT as Filler.

I use a 2.2 Fluid tip for Polys

Thanks for the replies. Yes, a whole gallon of SlickSand, but I just keep sanding most of it off. Works great for filling those low spots. A lot of dust on the floor in my garage! Didn't know I need to reduce FeatherFill. Would I still need to reduce the FeatherFill if I use a 2.2mm tip in 75-80 degree weather? But back to my original question, would I end up making less mistakes with a 1.8 or 2.2 tip?

You'll have to try and see which sprays better for the gun YOU HAVE. When I shot it with my Devilbiss FLG4 @ 23PSI on the inlet gauge with full fan and full fluid, it struggled with the 1.8 so I had to go to the 2.2 which sprayed great (in hind sight I could have added reducer, I could have maybe upped the air pressure to get good results with the 1.8 . You may have a differant brand/model tool and it's 1.8 and 2.2 may spray differantly than mine. Use a 50 percent overlap and be consistant with your distance from the panel (6 inches or so) and consistant travel speed. Mix a SMALL AMOUNT and test both tips to see the results. When you find what works best for YOUR SETUP, duplicate it. At least that's what I'd do.

Also, the mistakes will not be made by the tip but by the user. Both tips will most likely work for what your doing. The bigger tip size will just apply more material as long as all other variables are the same, which is ok as long as you apply it evenly at the thickness you want.

I am using the same gun as yours, Devilbiss FLG4. Not using the 50% overlap rule & starting with the gun too close to the panel have been my main mistakes. Some heavy spots and then lines where I didn't overlap enough. Also, going too fast with my sweeps is another mistake. Learning as I go...

I think you will like the Feather Fill G2 much better.
You only need to reduce it (and yes you need to use Acetone for that and clean up) if using the 1.8 tip. Just helps it spray better.

First off stop using both products, use one or the other, they are similar enough.

Second, if you have to poly twice your body work was not even good enough to start priming

be diligent in your body work, Featherfil 3.0 air gunsa, block with 150, use a flashlight find any pin holes and fill them, if you found a spot that needs a little more work go ahead and get that spot up to par, SPOT prime with featherfil any body work you may have had to do, block those spots with 150, again look for pin holes, when everything is good go ahead and block with 180,

now you should be ready to prime using a good 2k urethane.
use guide coat in between each step.

I happen to have one of those Air Gunzas in a 3.0 tip just for spraying FFG2 and it is awesome. I used to use the Finish Line with the 2.2 and it works ok. I usually thinned mine with regular reducer a bit with the 2.2 tip.

But as PD said, you shouldn't have to shoot that much G2FF, get your bodywork straight first.

*** PD (or others) what urethane primer/sealer do you recommend?

BTW PD, nice to see you chiming in again on the board, did you break your Jeep or something!!!!
