Hi,

I have a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi in nice shape inside and out - except for the well-known rust problem under the gas door on the rear quarter panel.

I know very little about cars - and even less about auto body - but is there an "easy" way for me to get rid of the rust spot and have the result look somewhat nice...?

It is an 18 year old car - just want to get rid of the rust spot.

.

Please post some pictures of your rusted area.
It is very hard to offer advice without actually seeing the extent of the rust.

The simple answer is: there is no easy way. That rust will turn into a big hole when you stat to remove it. Then it must be cut out, until you reach good solid metal, so you can weld in a new piece. the bodywork, primer and paint. Not a task for someone unfamiliar with cars or bodywork.

Would it be "cheaper" to just buy a rust-less rear quarter panel from a junk yard ($200) and have an auto body place swap it out - then to have them repair the original...?

That will largely depend on the shops in your area. Labor prices vary all over the country based upon the amount of competition, overhead costs and government regulations.

Take it to a shop and get an estimate. Then take it to another shop and see how they compare.
