Hi All and Merry Christmas

Thinking about getting started on a long delayed project again. This 61 Falcon has a spot thats oil canning. Shrinking on the spot with a torch would remove the curve from the panel. I'm thinking the metal needs to be pulled in the direction of the red arrow. If I run a weld bead at the door jamb in the area of the orange line would that shrink it in the right direction?

Thanks

Nice project I am looking for one of those myself myself to make a Gasser out of.

Oil cans are one of the hardest things to fix!
They can be caused by shrunk metal or stretched metal! Finding out which comes by reading the panel first!

Just saying blanket I need to stretch the metal here or there to cure the Can is not the correct way.

IF it was me and my car or panel I would strip the entire panel of ALL paint primer and filler so you can see the metal and inspect it first THE whole panel!
The Can is caused by damage some where on the panel, the key to fixing it, Is to fix that damage already on the panel correctly! It may have already been worked on and not finished or it was not done correctly. That damage will need to be stretched or Shrunk depends on the damage, It my be a Ruff Slide hammer job repair and just filled with Filler/Bondo and they let the can go.

Just adding some welding bead in a random area or hitting the panel with a Torch in some random area is going to cause more damage to the panel.

^^^^^^ This. You have underlying damage that's causing it.

:goodpost: :goodpost: it doesn't look like any end damage that would cause this. my thoughts are that its been hit from the side. on the oval you have drawn if you block along the top and bottom i think your going to find it being high. pushing the can out and lightly work the upper and lower high spots should do it. note i said lightly it doesn't take much to get things back in shape. when you get the can to stay out you may need to shrink the can area just A LITTLE. its real hard to say not being there to see it and touch it. good luck these things can be frustrating, keep us up to date please.

Thanks all. Interestingly, from inside the trunk I can see that the opposite rear quarter lower section behind the wheel opening has an old repair panel riveted in. The car is pretty rust free so its not a rust repair. I had a minor rear end collision in 2010 and the insurance pulled the rear bumper out and straightened it. Its not a valuable car just a little project that I didn't want to see get scrapped. Like Charlie Browns Christmas tree, it just needs a little love.
