Hi Guys,

I may have some bike parts to paint, (battery cover, chain guard, etc.) that are currently chrome but the owner wants them gloss black. I am concerned about primer adhesion. After sanding to say 120 grit, what would be my next stage for primer?

Thanks!!

I’d say scuff it like you say and give it a coat of your favorite epoxy primer. I would do a test piece to see the results first.

Getting paint to adhere to chrome can be notoriously difficult.

To do it properly you need wash primers, etch primer and a high build. However, I've had reasonable success with just epoxy. Substrate must be thoroughly sanded to P150-P180, leaving no spots still shiny chrome and must be surgically clean.

He seems to speak with a bit more authority, and by his response, more experience than I.

Just sayin

All good stuff. I don't think I have heard of a wash primer--I'll look it up. Thanks!!
