I am looking for a low gloss black paint for my 66 tempest.. it is for the dash, from what I read it is suppose to have a 60% gloss or sheen,. would a satin be similar to this? if not, how can I get to the 60% sheen, the color would be black..
thanks

about all you can do is get some and spray it on something and see what it looks like, its got to be close. one mans idea of satin might be different from someone else.

Most paint systems have an additive for clear that will flatten, i.e. reduce the gloss level. More advanced systems actually have different binders that can replace, in whole or in part, the high gloss binders. Or you could just buy some flat clear and mix with normal clear.
Regardless of the system used varying levels of gloss can be achieved by varying the mix ratios. Some systems, like Axalta, will actually give you approximate mix ratios to achieve percentage gloss levels. Chances are though that you'll have to do some experimentation. Remember that the gun you use, pressures and even technique can have a huge effect on gloss levels - one of the reasons why painting a matt finish car is so difficult. Chris

I will give the flattening agent a shot, on some patch panels.. |

Scrolling through youtube vids today, a person by the name ceedell restores a 66 convertible GTO the dash looks awesome, BUT, he says he uses rustoleum semi gloss in the quart can, it's a paint he commonly uses, when that sheen is required, This is a real nice restoration, he has over 50 vids on the process.. But the question I am going to ask, is this just crazy to do?? |
