So started a topic a year or so ago re cold oxidising bolts, the process was a failure, every bolt eventually rusted including those that were stored away from the elements.
Through the advice given here, I started blasting and then black epoxy priming my bolts.
They have stood up extremely well so far, a couple have some rust forming on the edges where my tooling was used, i revised my process of not fitting the bolts for 7 days so the epoxy primer was as hard as it was likely to get.
My question, do people that paint bolts at the momment put single or multiple coats on, is an any advantage gained from putting a coat on today and then tomorrow putting another one on, or coated is coated.
I use an airbrush, mix thinned 50 percent for applying epoxy primer to bolts

i would think to much build would create a problem. have you checked into cad platting? i put together a system this summer to do small parts for my engine, its about a 1 gallon tank. the items you need are easily available on line. i did the gold chromate look but i think you can do black also. i had real good results then all of a sudden my cad solution died and don't know why. i haven't done anything with it cense. its a little quirky but once you get it working it works good. lots of u-tube stuff on it.

Cad plating is pretty bad for you, a mate of mine runs an electroplating shop and specialises in cad plating of aviation parts, its great but dangerous as for your health

I 3d printed some generic threaded stands, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8 etc, allows me to easily hold the bolts blasting in sets of 5 and doubles as a stand for painting

I use a cardboard box and just screw the bolt in a little way.

thats what i do if i'm going to paint them, you can push them down however far you want to keep paint off the threads.

Yeh totally agree, i printed the holders up as it made it really easy to control them when I was sandblasting the bolts, they doubled as holders when painting.
I threw the loaded holders into the blaster, so they just sat there until i used the blaster next. Steve |

Any of the bolts that are seen I buy new, others I put them in the parts cleaner, buff them and apply some kind of epoxy, I then paint them.
