I appreciate it shouldn't be wet on a base coat.... But I find if the fluid is to low it scatters and is rough.... To wet and it's orange peel. I just can't find a happy medium.

Pressure I was using was always 25-30. I did try 35-40 but no luck with that

Also I usually spray at 6 inch with this gun.

I tried 12 but found it was to far away with this gun... I may be wrong but that's what I found with a day of trial and error.

I only got to the clear coat once as I was trying so many times to try get the base right..

I really think its temperature or the compressor.... I just don't want to go and blow £300 on a new compressor unles someone here says I need to.

Without getting into why using substandard equipment and expecting first class results isn't practical, let me suggest you set your spray gun up as previously detailed in another post.

Once you have it adjusted properly on paper, then move to the vehicle. Hold the gun about 4" from the surface and begin spraying at a slow and steady speed. You will think the clear is going to run but just try it. You should be able to watch the clear flow out onto the panel.

Orange peel is spraying too dry, too far or too fast.

This is clear sprayed right out of the gun:

I agree. For a small, one off job it's not worth it.

This does bother me a bit. By "fdm" do you mean Free Air Delivery? I know every country has its own way of rating compressors but, whatever that is, it's too low, even for your gun. However, you're only painting one little bit so what's in the tank should get you through.

Photos are always good. Thanks for putting them up.

What I see in Photo 1 is not so much orange peel as what's commonly called 'urethane wave". The finish is smooth and wet but there are these huge waves. In nautical terms what you have is more like a moderate swell whereas orange peel is more like wind chop. That is evident in your second picture.

From the situation in Picture 1, I'd increase pressure a bit, maybe to about 32psi (assuming you were on about 28psi before) and you'll need to speed up just a bit. From the second picture, reduce pressure by 3-4psi and slow down a touch.

If you're seeing wave on your basecoat then it's going on too heavy, no need to try to get coverage in one coat - an extra light coat or two will give you a better result. Don't go too light though. You should find, with that gun, that increasing your distance a little, with base coat, will give you a better result. Base should be flat and smooth when it's flashed off and ready for clear.

Talking of flashing off, 10C is really pushing the expectation to get the paint to work the way it should. Can you get hold of one of those halogen heat/work lights - the 500 watt ones are best. Use before painting to get your surface temperature above 15C and then afterwards to assist flashing off. Not too close though - you don't want the paint to skin on the top but remain wet underneath.
