Thanks everyone for the help. I've got the system working great as far as spraying the primer, now have another question about sanding it.

I normally use a mist of black spray paint when I'm sanding filler or primer, but have a problem with it clogging up the sandpaper. I've also used the 3M powder, but don't like it as well as the paint because it doesn't contrast as well when sanding. Would like to hear what the pros use for contrast when sanding filler or primer.

3M powder graphite (like you said)
aerosol guide coat
lacquer primer

some pro tips,

I keep a flash light close to find pin holes

then i use a graphite stick to circle any areas I need to revisit.

graphite is a amazing tool, circle pin holes, low spots, etc keeps you moving forward when blocking and a nice visual walking around the car when you are ready to revisit areas

powdered for me. the aerosol's take to long to cure enough to sand with out the clogging you experianced. powdered can be sanded imidiately. contrast should be good unless your useing black or maybe dark gray primer.

Both great posts above. I like the 3M Dry Guide coat. If you are not seeing any contrast you must not be putting it on right. I use it all the way through the process, including cut and buff when necessary.

First off, I love how this material works. It lays on thick and sands really easy. My problem is not so much working with it after application, but the application process itself. I'm using a DeVillbiss FLG4 gun with a 2.0 tip. For the most part it's spraying well, but I'm having a problem with the gun stopping up and the material setting up very quickly in the gun. I'm having to completely clean the gun between every cup as it starts setting up almost immediately. My shop is 75 degrees, so I don't think temperature is the issue. I've found I can only mix about a half cup at a time or it gets too thick to spray by the end. I'm following the directions very carefully about the filler/catalyst ratio, so think I'm doing that right.

I'm hoping I'm doing something wrong that can be corrected as I really want to use it, but It's a real pain right now applying.

I run a FLG4 with a 2.0 tip when doing Feather fill or Slick sand & never had a problem plus I never reduced it.
I am wondering are you using the little Paint filter that goes in bottom of the cup that comes with the Gun?

When I am playing with that stuff I don't let Grass grow under my feet when shooting it!!! Tech sheet says 15 max time in cup I cut that to 10-12 min Measure and Mix it up in a cup strain it through a filter while pouring it in gun put lid on cup set timer for ten min! Spay my junk and then flush gun out real quick then disassemble the gun & wash gun out real good real quick!!!!!
Get a Timer with a bell use it!! I use one for all my timed stuff such as Flash times it forces you to wait for the time.

I have never had that stuff kick in my gun. But if it did its only an old Devilbiss FLG4.
If it kicked in the gun I would just throw the gun away I wouldn't even try cleaning it.

Using those needle pin cleaning kits ruins the Air and Paint passages in the Air caps.
I cant even imagine cleaning a gun out that has had that stuff kick in the gun F that!
