Hi Chris
If application or material used take as long as 6 months to show though? In my experience any problems with either show up almost instantly or within a few days weeks. The paint job consisted of a rub down to bare metal, epoxy primer , filler primer, basecoat , artwork and then 2k clear. Thanks |

This may not be the case in your paint job, but one of mine did this.
Actually, the customer did it TO the paint job. After it had been painted, sanded, buffed, and on the bike, he needed to remove it. To work on the engine. He drained the tanks somewhat, and placed it in a bucket, in case any more gas was in it. He covered the tank with a towel, so it wouldn't get dirty in his garage. I'm sure you all know what happened. His tank looked exactly like that one! |

I have had this happen to me on a few different Bike Tanks.
The Tank is leaking under the paint at the Pinch welds caused by Rust. Tank Has Rust inside caused from moisture, Moisture collects from Air when tanks are not kept full of fuel. Climates that see lots of morning dew are more susceptible to this than others. Southern California! for sure. OP 2nd pic says it all. This can easily be confirmed by applying air pressure to Tank soapy water to exterior in my case no soapy water was necessary lol how I missed the pin holes I will never know! Mainly because I wasn't looking for them lol ! Tried special Tank coatings but they failed. You can also look inside Tank with bright flashlight or use one of those remote tiny USB cameras. See rust Trash the Tank! Even if Special Coatings are used to coat the interior Tank they do not work as well as advertised some are better than others ask me how I now? I Stay away from Tank Coatings now. Buy a New fuel Tank not worth effort to try patching and repainting just to happen again. Dennis B.

This is a very interesting conversation. Good to know as I learn more about prep and painting a vehicle. I do remember reading an article and seeing a car with the same problem on the internet. The statement said that this wrinkling,or lifting was caused by the solvents that were attacking the old paint and that it was because of not waiting for the correct flash time before recoating. Or,if you waited too long to recoat.
It mentions that to verify the problem,to get a shop towell and soak it in Lacquer thinner and wipe an area that is not wrinkle and wait a few minutes, if the paint wrinkles up,than the cause is what is mentioned above. Of course you guys may say: don't believe everything you read on the internet. As all of you know,I am a beginner, learning from the best here. I am just mentioning the article that I read,be it true or false. |

NO this is not your problem. this that they are talking about is when useing lacquer over an enamel undercoat or other sensitive material and usually happens within minutes of the application. there are other factors usually when useing enamel based materials. its really rare and difficult to have any lifting problems with a base clear job. UNLESS your putting in over something that you don't know what it is, like an uncatalyzed material or enamel base of some kind. Jay D. they say my name is Jay

I have seen this before but not on such a large scale, it is usually a leak in the tank and the gas is fuming out eating the paint, OR customer spilled gas all over it gassing up and your paint failed to withstand the gasoline.
did you blast the tank ? grind it for filler ? what was the condition of paint you painted over ? have the customer or yourself pull some of that paint off and smell it. Experienced Trained Certified

Thanks all for your input it is very much appreciated. I have run this info past the customer and he has accepted this as the probable cause. I suspect he might have already knew this himself to be honest.
Thanks again |
