if its going to be used on a track i would D/A it with 180 real good feathering out any old finish. then wipe it down with wax and grease remover, make sure you do it right, wipe on wipe off. you'll need to get the aluminum CLEAN you may need to do the wipe down several times to get a CLEAN rag ( no residue on your rag). then use some epoxy mixed as a sealer, then your color. i don't think its necessary to get radical with this.

Sealing with epoxy will or should stop any problems with the old finish. posibly an uncatalyzed enamel of some kind, that doesn't like to be recoated sometimes. lifting at the feathered edges is the most common problem.

Sprint cars get a lot of abuse! I wouldn't get to excited about anything you do its gonna get beat up working on it not to mention dirt and Rocks flying at it on the Track and the Occasional roll over in Battle.
I always Loved Sprint cars, Wished they raced them here I would get involved with them again. Dennis B.
